MHS Bulldogs won state baseball championship 60 years ago

Tuesday was the 60th anniversary of the Maysville Bulldogs' 7-1 win over Harlan in the state championship baseball game at Stoll Field in Lexington.

Maysville edged Shelbyville 3-2 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, June  4 and shutout du Pont Manual 1-0 in the morning semifinals on Thursday, June 5.

The championship game was played in the afternoon on June 5. 

Maysville lefthander Allen Smith was the winning pitcher in all three games at the state tournament. He pitched in relief in the win over Shelbyville and was the starting pitcher in both the semifinals and finals. Smith, who went on to a standout career at Louisiana State University, tossed a one-hitter against Shelbyville and a five-hitter against Harlan.

Woodie Crum was the Maysville coach. Team members in addition to Allen Smith included Chuck Hayslip, Bob Reetz, Phil Hutchison, Jackie Allison, Robert Alexander, Ulysses Greene, Eugene Fetters, Bill Knox, Keith Smith, Duane Faris, Bob Hutchison, Dwight Murphy and David Green. Wayne Tolle was the manager.
