Rough day in the regional tournaments for local teams

The St. Patrick and Mason County baseball teams and the Mason County softball team all suffered lopsided losses today in first round games in the 10th Region tournaments.
The St. Patrick Saints lost to the Harrison County Thorobreds 14-2 in five innings in the 10th Region baseball tournament at Clark County. Harrison County scored nine runs in the second inning.
The Mason County Royals lost to the Bourbon County Colonels 12-1 in the 10th Region baseball tournament. Bourbon County scored five runs in the first inning. Chris Norman hit two two-run home runs for the Colonels.
The Mason County Lady Royals lost to the Harrison County Fillies 22-6 in three innings in the 10th Region softball tournament at Harrison County. The Fillies scored 12 runs in the second inning. Rachel Hatfield hit two home runs for Harrison County.

Mason County girls' and boys' track and field teams are region champions

The Mason County girls' and boys' track and field teams are region champions. The Royals and Lady Royals won the Class AA Region 6 meets at Russell High School Saturday. The Lady Royals had a total of 130.5 points. Russell finished second with 112 points. It's the Lady Royals' second consecutive region championship. The Royals won their first region championships by edging Russell by two points (93-91).
"We are extremely proud of both of these groups of kids today," Coach Mark Kachler wrote in an e-mail mesage. "I cannot say enough about how hard they have worked this year starting back in December in the indoor track season and carrying over into now. All the efforts have really paid off."
The state meet is Thursday at the University of the Louisville. Here is a list of the Mason County athletes who won events at the region meet:

Husband and wife win Olympic triathlons, Kitze women's Du for 8th time

Ryan Shanahan of Bloomington, Indiana won the Olympic Triathlon in a time of 1:27:17.6 at the 10th Annual Buffalo Trails MultiSport Races in Maysville this morning. Shanahan's wife, Sarah Sanders, won the women's Olympic Triathlon in a time of 1:45:03.8. Shanahan set a new record in the swim with a time of 8:46.2.
Michelle Kitze won the women's Duathlon for the eighth time. Kitze did the bike-run-bike in a time of 1:53:59.2. Kitze is 9-0 in Maysville. She won the triathlon in 2005. The races were delayed 91 minutes because of heavy fog. Other winners include:

10th Annual Buffalo Trails MultiSport Races are Saturday

The 10th Annual Buffalo Trails MultiSport Races take place Saturday morning in Maysville. The event includes an olympic triathlon, a sprint triathlon, a duathlon and a 5K run. The olympic triathlon and duathlon both begin at 8 a.m. The water samples were good and the swim is on. Online registration has ended. Tee King named to All-KYtrackXC.com Middle School Team

Mason County 8th grader Tee King has been named to the All-KytrackXC.com Middle School Team. King, the state champion in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash, was named to the All-Sprint Team.

Stephen Howell on Centre College football team's trip to England

Centre College tight end Stephen Howell of Maysville is on a team trip to England. The Colonels will play an exhibition game against the Great Britain Lions Saturday in London. Howell is a rising senior. Here is a link to the press release.

Sarah Mitchell signs to plat softball at Midway College

Mason County senior Sarah Mitchell signed today to play softball at Midway College. Mitchell has played every position for the Lady Royals expect for catcher. She had three hits and two RBI in the Lady Royals' win over St. Patrick in the 39th District Tournament Monday and was named to the All Tournament Team.
Mason County Coach Meredith Fraysure says Mitchell is a leader on the field and off.
"Often times, she's the very first person at practice, she's the very last person at practice," Fraysure said. "I can always rely on her to get things set. She gets her teammates moving. Playing-wise, I would say her strongest suit is her defense."
Midway College Coach Leigh Oakley says Mitchell will be one of 14 new players for the Eagles next season and everybody is going to be competing for playing time.

Royals beat Saints 12-2 for seventh straight district title

The Mason County Royals are the 39th District champions for the seventh consecutive year. The Royals beat the St. Patrick Saints 12-2 in five innings in the championship game of the district tournament tonight in Augusta. The Royals scored in each inning. Third baseman Corey Walker went 3-for-3 and had 4 RBI. Ryne King tossed a two-hitter and struck out seven. Both teams advance to the 10th Region Tournament at Clark County. The draw is Saturday.

Lady Royals will play in Saint Andrew's Classic in Florida

The Mason County Lady Royals will play in the Saint Andrew's Holiday Classic in Boca Raton, Florida next season. The tournament will be played December 18-21 at Saint Andrew's School. This will be the girls' basketball program's first trip to Florida. After a brief break for Christmas, the Lady Royals will play in the Owensboro Classic December 27-31.

Saints snap 13-game losing skid, Royals beat Bracken County

The St. Patrick Saints snapped a 13-game losing streak and avenged a 30-1 loss to Augusta with a 6-5 win over the Panthers tonight in the semifinals of the 39th District baseball tournament at Augusta. The Saints scored five runs in the third inning to lead 6-2. Augusta scored three runs in the top seventh inning and had a runner on third with one out. But Stephen Mason got back-to-back strikeouts to end the game. It is St. Patrick's first win since a 14-5 victory over Silver Grove in their season opener on March 27.
The Mason County Royals used a seven-run third inning to beat the Bracken County Polar Bears 13-5 in the first game. Mason County led 13-0 in the middle of the fourth inning. Lee Sutton pitched a complete game and struck out 10 batters.
St. Patrick (2-13) and Mason County (13-15) meet in the championship game Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Augusta.

Lady Royals and Lady Bears advance in district

The Mason County Lady Royals defeated the St. Patrick Lady Saints 10-4 and the Bracken County Lady Bears shutout the Augusta Lady Panthers 18-0 in the three innings in the semifinals of the 39th District fast pitch softball tournament today at the Maysville-Mason County Recreation Park. Every Lady Royal had at least one hit. St. Patrick ends the season with a 10-11 record. Bracken County pitcher Sara Sticklen threw a no-hitter and struck out eight batters. Mason County (9-17) and Bracken County (20-17) will meet in the championship game Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Russell Rigg takes third place in Musslemann/Dunne event in Lebanon

Russell Rigg shot an 81 Sunday and finished third in the Musslemann-Dunn Golf Tour event at Rosewood Golf Club in Lebanon. Rigg was the runner-up in the season-opening tournament in Owensboro and won the tournament in Prestonsburg in Week Two. There are 18 regular season tournaments scheduled on the tour this year. The Tour Championship will be played July 19-20 at Big Spring Country Club in Louisville.

The 39th District softball and baseball tournaments begin today. The softball tournament will be played at the Maysville-Mason County Recreation Park. The baseball tournament takes place in Augusta. The games will be on WFTM-AM 1240. Here are the schedules:

Lofton's first season in Spain ends in playoff loss

Chris Lofton's first season in Spain ended today when Asefa Estudiantes lost to Caja Laboral 85-83.
Caja Laboral wins the ACB quarterfinal series 2-0. Lofton scored nine points. He was three-of-five on three-pointers.

Mark Blakefield wins ADI Classic by two shots

Mark Blakefield won the ADI Classic on the NGA Hooters Tour for the second time in three years today. Blakefield played his third straight bogey-free round at Cherry Blossom Golf and Country Club in Georgetown, Kentucky. He shot a five-under-par 65 and had a 72-hole total of 23-under for a two shot win over Andy Pope and Chip Deason. Drew Traxel was Blakefield's caddy for the third straight year at the ADI Classic. It's Blakefield's second win this season on the Hooters Tour and the third of his career. He won $30,000 today, and is now the leading money winner on the tour with $62,763. Mason County girls 2nd, boys 3rd at Area 7 Championships

The Mason County girls were the runners-up and the Mason County boys finished third at the Area 7 Championships Saturday at Rowan County. The Lady Royals were edged out by a point and a half by Fairview (130.5-129). The Royals finished 21 points behind the champions- the Rowan County Vikings, and three points behind the Russell Red Devils, the runners-up. Tee King is the state champion in the boys' 100 and 200 meters

Mason County 8th grader Tee King is the middle school state champion in the boys' 100 meter dash and the boys' 200 meter dash. He won the races Saturday at the KTCCCA Middle School State Championship at Paul Dunbar High School in Lexington. King won the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.51. His winning time in the 200 meter dash was 23.40. The Mason County boys finished 10th in the team standings.

Blakefield tied for the lead heading into final round of ADI Classic

Mark Blakefield is tied for the lead heading into the final round of the ADI Classic on the NGA Hooters Tour. For the second consecutive round, Blakefield fired a seven-under par 65 (with seven birdies and no bogeys) today at Cherry Blossom Golf and Country Club in Georgetown, Kentucky.
He is 18-under for the tournament and tied with three others for the lead. Blakefield will be in the final group Sunday with a 9:57 a.m. tee time. Blakefield won the ADI Classic in 2008 and tied for 10 place last year.

Blakefield fires a 65, 2 shots back after two rounds of ADI Classic

Mark Blakefield fired a seven-under-par 65 in the second round of the NGA Hooters Tour's ADI Classic in Georgetown, Kentucky and is two shots off the lead. Blakefield had seven birdies and no bogeys in the second round which was not completed until today. He is 11-under for the tournament, tied for eighth place. There is a four-way tie for the lead at 13-under. Chris Erwin shot a 59 Friday to grab a share of the lead. The third round was scheduled to begin 2 p.m. today at Cherry Blossom Golf and Country Club.

Lofton scores 4 points in a playoff loss

Chris Lofton had four points, two rebounds and one assist in Asefa Estudiantes' 92-76 loss to Caja Laboral in the first round of the ACB playoffs in Spain Friday night. Caja Laboral made an ACB playoff-record 17 three-pointers. Game two of the series is Sunday night.

Royals returning to Iolani Classic in Hawaii

For the second time in four seasons, the Mason County Royals will play in the Iolani Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The tournament, which is sponsored by Nike, will be played Dec. 16-21 at Iolani School. Mason County went 3-1 in the 2007 Iolani Classic. Fans are invited to make the trip again this year. Mason County has reserved a total of 100 seats on four different United Airlines flights. All four flights will go to Denver, then fans will be on the same flight to Honolulu. The team will be on an American Airlines flight. There is a $5o deposit required to reserve a seat on one of the four flights. The deposit must be paid by June 1. The deposit is fully refundable before October 7 if you decide not to go. The cost of the flight is $1,084 including taxes. The deposit does not come off the total cost of the ticket, but will be reimbursed after the flight. The cost of the hotel room is $99 a night. Blakefield shoots a 4-under-par 68 in first round of ADI Classic

Mark Blakefield shot a four-under-par 68 today in the first round the ADI Classic at Cherry Blossom Golf and Country Club in Georgetown, Kentucky. Blakefield is four shots off the lead in the NGA Hooters Tour event. He had five birdies and a bogey. Blakefield's second round tee time is 1:06 p.m. Admission to the tournament is free.

Mason County boys 2nd, girls 3rd at Russell Meet of Champions

Mason County was the runner-up in the boys' standings and third in the girls' standings at the Russell Meet of Champions Tuesday night. Russell's boys and girls were the champions. The Royals were 14 points behind the Red Devils. The Lady Royals were 11 points behind Russell and one behind the runner-up, Fairview. Here is a list of Mason County's first place finishers:

Blakefield to tee it up in Georgetown, Ky. this week

Mark Blakefield will play in the ADI Classic on the NGA Hooters Tour at Cherry Blossom Golf Club in Georgetown, Kentucky beginning Thursday. Blakefield is 8th on the NGA Hooters Tour money list. He won the season-opening tournament in Ocala, Florida in March. Blakefield has made the cut in two Nationwide Tour events this year. He won the ADI Classic in 2008 and tied for 10th place last year. Blakefield has an 8:06 a.m. tee time on No. 10 Thursday.

Russell Rigg gets first win of the season

Russell Rigg picked up his first win of the season- a five-shot victory in the Stone Crest KIA Classic on the Mussleman-Dunn Golf Tour. Rigg fired a two-under-par 70 Saturday at Stone Crest Golf Course in Prestonsburg. The second round was rained out today. Rigg hit nine of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens Saturday. He had 28 putts.

Mason Co. girls and boys sweep Fleming Co. Twilight Meet

The Mason County girls and boys track and field teams swept the Fleming County Twilight Meet Friday night. The Lady Royals won 15 of 18 events and finished second in five events. The boys 4x200 relay team posted the second fastest time in Kentucky this year (1:29.0). Here is a list of Mason County's first place finishers:

Campbell County wrestlers Shotwell and Ilg sign with colleges

Campbell County seniors Korey Shotwell and Nathan "Nate" Ilg will continue their wrestling careers in college. Shotwell, a resident of Maysville, signed today with The Citadel in Charleston, SC. Ilg signed with Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. Ilg's grandparents, Bill and Mary Flynn, live in Mason County. Shotwell was a regional champion three out of the last four years. He finished third in the 145 pound class in the state tournament this past season. Shotwell is seventh on the national wins list with 276 career victories and holds five school records. Ilg won the region and finished seventh in the 189 pound class at the state tournament. Shotwell and Ilg were both named Kentucky Wrestling All-Stars by the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Chris Morris finishes third in NCAA Division III Championship

Centre College junior Chris Morris of Maysville fired a five-under-par 67 today and finished third in the NCAA Division III Championship in Hershey, Pa. Morris had seven birdies and one bogey today at Hershey Links. He had a 72-hole total of three-under 284 and finished four shots behind the winner and one shot behind the runner-up. Centre tied for 13th in the team competition.

Justin Lang signs with Shawnee State University

Mason County senior Justin Lang signed this morning to play basketball at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth. Lang, a 5-10 guard, averaged 8.9 points a game for the Royals this past season. He matched his career high with 16 points in the championship game of the 10th Region Tournament. Mason County Coach Chris O'Hearn says Shawnee State Coach Jeff Hamilton says he knows Lang is going to work hard and be a great teammate.

Centre College junior Chris Morris is tied for fifth place after three rounds of the NCAA Division III Championship in Hershey, Pa. Morris shot an even par 72 today at Hershey Links. He has a 54-hole total of two-over 217 and is seven shots off the lead. Centre is 13th in the team standings. The final round will be played Friday.

High school track and field season winding down

The high school track and field season is winding down. Mason County has just three regular season meets before the regional meet. Here is the schedule:

Chris Morris T4 after second round of NCAA Div. III Tournament

Centre College junior Chris Morris fired a one-under par 70 today and is tied for fourth place after two rounds of the NCAA Division III golf tournament in Hershey, Pa. He had three birdies and a double bogey today on the Hershey Country Club East Course. Morris has a 36-hole total of two-over 145. He is seven shots off the lead. Centre remains tied for 10th place in the team standings.

Chris Morris T18 after first round of NCAA Div. III tourney

Centre College junior Chris Morris shot a three-over par 75 today and is tied for 18th place after the first round of the NCAA Division III golf tournament at the Hershey Links in Hershey, Pa. Centre College is in 10 place in the team competition. The tournament runs through Friday.

Pawsat gets first scholarship offer from Murray State

Several schools are recruiting Mason County quarterback Neal Pawsat, and Murray State is the first to offer him a scholarship. The Racers' coaching staff made the offer this morning. Kentucky, Purdue, Illinois and Western Kentucky are among the schools that have sent recruiters to Mason County in recent weeks. Pawsat visited Illinois last month. North Carolina State and Duke have also expressed interest in Pawsat who will be a senior next season.

Royals lose to Clark County 11-3

The Mason County Royals lost to the Clark County Cardinals 11-3 on Senior Night tonight. The Royals led 3-1 after two innings, but Clark County scored 10 unanswered runs. Mason County left 12 runners on base, including seven in the first three innings. Ryne King had three hits for the Royals. Mason County (12-13) plays at Bishop Brossart Tuesday.

Altech FEI World Equestrian Games Whistle Stop Bus Blitz comes to Maysville

The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Whistle Stop Bus Blitz kicked off its 15-city tour in Maysville this morning. Kentucky commissioner of Travel and Tourism Mike Cooper and officials with the Alltech FEI WEG gave a presentation at the Maysville Conference Center. The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games will be held September 25-October 10 at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Here is a link to the event's website.

Royals host 24-5 Clark County Cardinals Monday

The Mason County Royals host the Clark County Cardinals Monday at 6 p.m. Clark County leads the 10th Region in wins with 24 and is ranked 22nd in the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association Poll. The Cardinals have only lost five games and are on a three-game winning streak. Clark County won 12 straight games earlier in the season. The Cardinals have given up only 95 runs this season. Mason County (12-12) has won two straight games and seven of its last 10. The game will be on WFTM AM 1240 and online on www.soft96.com

BuffaloTrails Multisport races May 29

The 10th Annual Buffalo Trails Multisport Races will be held Saturday, May 29 in Maysville, Ky. The Duathlon- a 2.45 mile run, 26.1 mile bike and 3.1 mile run-begins at 8 a.m. The Triathlon also begins at 8 a.m. and features a .5 mile swim in the Ohio River, a 26.1 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. The Sprint Triathlon is a .3 mile swim in the Ohio River, 12 mile bike and 1.5 mile run and begins at approximately 8:15 a.m. The 5K Run covers 3.05 miles and also begins at approximately 8:15 a.m. The run course is through historic downtown Maysville and a residential area in the east end of the city. The bike course includes the downtown area, rolling hills in the country and the challenging “Big Hiney Hill.” The Buffalo Trails Multi-Sport Races feature chip timing and are sanctioned by the USAT.

Kelly Carwile is the new coach at Pike County Central

Mason County assistant boys basketball coach Kelly Carwile has been named the head coach at Pike County Central in Pikeville. Carwile, a former head coach at Lyon County and Webster County, has been as assistant coach at Mason County the past two seasons. He has also served as an assistant coach at Graves County and Hopkinsville.

Soccer cancelled, football weight room open

The Mason County Middle School boys and girls soccer games vs. Paris are cancelled today.
The Mason County football weight room will be open today from 3 to 4 p.m. Participation is not mandatory, but players are urged to be there if they are able. Incoming freshmen are also welcome. Players need to be picked up no later than 4 p.m.

Mark Blakefield shot a five-over-par 76 today in the final round of the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA and tied for 63rd place in the Nationwide Tour event. Blakefield had a 72-hole total of five-over 289.

Mark Blakefield shot an even par 71 today in the third round of the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA on the Nationwide Tour. Blakefield is at even par 213 for the tournament and is tied for 41st place.
