Colt Fearis signs with Georgetown College

Mason County senior Colt Fearis signed this morning to play football at Georgetown College. Fearis says he was recruited to play wide receiver for the Tigers. He was primarily a wide receiver and defensive back for Mason County. He was the quarterback for the final three games last season after Neal Pawsat suffered a season-ending injury. As a receiver, Fearis had 12 receptions for 164 yards and three touchdowns his senior season. On defense, he had 51 tackles and one interception. He had a fumble recovery on special teams. In three games at quarterback, Fearis completed 14-of-20 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 144 yards and four touchdowns.

College hoops roundup

Trevor Setty scored 13 points for Pikeville College in a 94-80 loss to Rio Grande last night. Pikeville closes out the regular season Saturday night at the University of the Cumberlands.
Darius Miller started and had seven points, eight rebounds, two blocks and one assist in Kentucky's 82-61 win over South Carolina last night. The Wildcats play at Tennessee Saturday at noon.

Royals beat Polar Bears 67-45 in district championship game

The Mason County Royals won the 39th District Tournament for the 10th straight year with a 67-45 victory over the Bracken County Polar Bears in the championship game tonight at Bracken County. The Royals closed the first half on an 18-2 run to lead by 20. Mason County shot 71.4% in the first half, including 8-of-10 in the second quarter. Jordan Gilbert led the Royals in scoring with 13 points. Ryne King scored 12 points. Rheuben Bluford had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Treg Setty scored 11 points and Justin Lang added 10 points.

Lady Royals edge Bracken County 55-53 for district title

The Mason County Lady Royals, down seven at the half, rallied to edge the Bracken County Lady Bears 55-53 tonight in the championship game of the 39th District Tournament at Bracken County. Keller Menke made two free throws to tie the game at 53-53 with 24 seconds to play, and hit the go ahead layup with 2.6 seconds left. After a timeout, Menke intercepted the inbounds to clinch the victory. Bracken County missed 17 free throws in the game. Menke had a double-double with 28 points and 16 rebounds. Beth Queen added 11 points.

Ryan Hamm scores five points in Thomas More victory

Ryan Hamm scored five points to help Thomas More College defeat Waynesburg University 84-71 Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. Hamm hit a three-pointer and two free throws. Thomas More will host Bethany College in the semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m. Here is a link to the recap of Tuesday night's game.

Turner scores 25 points in a loss in the KIAC Tournament

Mikah Turner scored 25 points for Berea College in a 105-89 loss to Cincinnati Christian University in the first round of the KIAC Tournament Tuesday night. Turner was 10-of-17 from the field including 5-of-9 on three-pointers.

Royals pulled away early in an 84-55 win over the Saints

The Mason County Royals scored 17 straight points in the first quarter on their way to an 84-55 victory over the St. Patrick Saints tonight in the semifinals of the 39th District Tournament at Bracken County. Jordan Gilbert scored a career-high 21 points for Mason County. Treg Setty and Bradley Lang scored 14 points apiece. Rheuben Bluford and Neal Pawsat each scored 10 points. Ryan Gallenstein led St. Patrick in scoring with 11 points. Josh Newman added 10 points. Mason County will play Bracken County in the championship game Thursday at 8 p.m.

Lady Royals rally past Lady Saints 46-40

The Mason County Lady Royals rallied from a nine-point third quarter deficit to beat the St. Patrick Lady Saints 46-40 tonight in the semifinals of the 39th District Tournament at Bracken County. After trailing by four at the half, St. Patrick led 33-24 in the final minute of the third quarter. But the Lady Royals ended the game on a 22-7 run to advance to the district championship game and next week's regional tournament. Keller Menke had a double-double for Mason County with 14 points and 19 rebounds. Bailey Menke also scored 14 points. Chelsea Douglas was St. Patrick's leading scorer with 12 points. Mason County will play Bracken County in the championship game Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Bracken Co. girls and boys win district openers

The Bracken County girls' and boys' teams were winners on the opening night of the 39th District tournaments tonight. The Lady Bears defeated the Augusta Lady Panthers 72-46. The Polar Bears beat the Augusta Panthers 78-53. The Bracken County teams advance to the district championship games and earned berths in the regional tournaments.

Myers win 3000 meter run at Mason County meet

Mason County senior Jim Myers won the 3000 meter run in a time of 10:09.45 at the Mason County indoor track meet Saturday. Mason County entered a limited number of athletes. Mason County will host its final indoor meet of the season this Saturday at noon at the US Bank/Mason County Schools Indoor Athletic Facility. Admission is $5. Shotwell takes third place at state wrestling tournament

Campbell County senior Korey Shotwell took third place in the 145 pound class at the state wrestling tournament. After winning his first three matches, Shotwell lost his semifinal match by fall to the eventual champion, Trinity senior Grant Ohlman. Shotwell bounced to win two matches for his second straight third place finish at the state tournament. He finishes the season with a 52-5 record.

Saints outscore Bourbon County 92-84

Lee Gallenstein had a double-double with 26 points (a career high) and 13 rebounds and the St. Patrick Saints outscored the Bourbon County Colonels 92-84 tonight in Paris. Stephen Mason scored 19 points. Taylor Slack tossed in 18 points. Cody Jodrey scored a career-high 13 points, and Ryan Gallenstein added 11 points. St. Patrick (10-13) closed out the regular season with two straight wins and won three of their last four games. The Saints play the Mason County Royals in the 39th District Tournament Tuesday night at Bracken County.

The St. Patrick Lady Saints snapped a four-game losing streak with a 50-39 Senior Night victory over the Rowan County Lady Vikings tonight. Anne Klee had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Charisma Payne added 12 points. St. Patrick plays Mason County in the 39th District Tournament Tuesday night at Bracken County.

The Mason County Royals celebrated Senior Night with a 57-44 win over the Bryan Station Defenders tonight in the Spectrum Graphx Classic. The Royals led by 16 in the third quarter. Bryan Station got to within four points early in the fourth quarter before Mason County pulled away again. Jordan Gilbert led the Royals in scoring with 14 points. Rheuben Bluford had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. He also blocked seven shots. Justin Lang had 10 points and four steals. With Tyler Black returning to action, Mason County was at full strength for the first time this season. The Royals play the St. Patrick Saints in the 39th District Tournament Tuesday night at Bracken County.

Lady Royals lose to Montgomery County 66-54

The Mason County Lady Royals fell behind 8-0 and never caught up in a 66-54 loss to Montgomery County tonight on Senior Night at the Spectrum Graphx Classic. Keller Menke scored a game-high 27 points and moved past Kasey Litzinger into fifth place on Lady Royals' all-time scoring list. She was 10-of-15 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Mason County plays St. Patrick in the 39th District Tournament Tuesday night at Bracken County.

Shotwell wins first round match at state tournament

Korey Shotwell won his opening round match in the state wrestling tournament Thursday. Shotwell, a senior at Campbell County, defeated Seneca junior Tim Williams in a fall at 1:27 in the 145 pound class. Shotwell's second round opponent is Meade County senior Joey Carter.

Saints beat Fleming County 60-54 on Senior Night

The St. Patrick Saints ended the game with a 10-2 run and celebrated Senior Night with a 60-54 victory over the Fleming County Panthers tonight. The win avenges a 17 point loss to the Panthers on Dec. 28. Stephen Mason scored a game-high 22 points for St. Patrick. Lee Gallenstein added 14 points. The Saints close out the regular season Friday night at Bourbon County.

Lady Saints' rally comes up short in 63-59 loss to Montgomery County

The St. Patrick Lady Saints put together a furious rally, but came up short in a 63-59 loss to the Montgomery County Lady Indians in Mt. Sterling tonight. After trailing by 16 points late in the third quarter, the Lady Saints went on a 18-4 run to cut the deficit to two at 54-52 with less than three minutes left in the game. But Montgomery County answered with a 6-0 run and held on for the win. Charisma Payne had a game-high 21 points for the Lady Saints. Anne Klee had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. St. Patrick will host the Rowan County Lady Vikings on Senior Night Friday night.

Big Night planned for Mason County's Senior Night

Mason County will honor its seniors and three teams from the past on Senior Night Friday night at The Fieldhouse. The Lady Royals will host the Montgomery County Lady Indians in the first game at 6 p.m. The Royals play the Bryan Station Defenders in the second game. The Senior Night ceremony and presentations by the JROTC and the Mason County Choir will take place between games.
Mason County's first two girls' teams will be introduced at halftime of the girls' game. The 1974-75 Lady Royals, coached by Phyllis Mahan went 10-6 and won the 39th District Tournament. The 1975-76 squad, coached by Bob Hutchison, won the 39th District Tournament and the 10th Region Tournament for the school's first trip to the state tournament. The Lady Royals advanced to the semifinals of the 1976 state tournament and ended the season with a 23-5 record.
Mason County's first boys' team will be introduced at halftime of the boys' game. The 1960-61 Royals, coached by William "Teence" Ryan had a 24-4 record and won the 39th District Tournament. Saints lose to Lewis County 70-65

The St. Patrick Saints lost to the Lewis County Lions 70-65 Wednesday night in Vanceburg. Taylor Slack led the Saints in scoring with 15 points. Stephen Mason scored 14 points and passed Jordan Owens for seventh place on the Saints' all-time scoring list. Josh Newman scored a career-high 14 points. St. Patrick hosts Fleming County tonight on Senior Night.

Charisma Payne returned to action after being injured in an automobile accident on Feb. 5 and led the Lady Saints in scoring with 19 points. Chelsea Douglas scored 10 points. St. Patrick is back in action tonight at Montgomery County.

Korey Shotwell wins regional

Campbell County senior Korey Shotwell of Maysville has won a regional wrestling championship for the second straight year and the third time in four years. Shotwell won the Region 6 title at 145 pounds Saturday at Simon Kenton. Shotwell is 47-4 this season. The state wrestling tournament is Thursday through Saturday at the Frankfort Convention Center. Mikah Turner scores 2,000th career point, is KIAC Player of the Week

Mikah Turner scored 35 points including his 2,000th career point to lead Berea College to a 96-73 win over Indiana University East Friday night. He was named Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week today. Turner, the leading scorer in NAIA Division II, was 13-of-24 from the field including 3-of-6 on three-point shots in Friday night's game. He was 6-of-6 from the free throw line and had 12 rebounds. Turner scored 31 points in a 103-90 victory over Cincinnati Christian University Saturday. It was his third 30-point game of the week. Turner has scored 30 or more points in four straight games and in 12 of the last 14 games.

Mason Co. girls' 4x400 meter relay team sets school record

The Mason County girls' 4x400 meter relay team of Valerie Rice, Madison Paver, Iretta Carpenter and Ashley Deatley set a school record (4:46.77) and won the race at the indoor meet Saturday at the US Bank/Mason County Schools Indoor Athletic Facility. Mason County finished fifth in the girls' high school meet, 11th in the boys' high school meet, second in the boys' middle school meet and third in the girls' middle school meet. Lady 'Stangs hold off Lady Saints 67-62

The St. Patrick Lady Saints put together a couple of fourth quarter rallies, but came up short in a 67-62 loss to the Bishop Brossart Lady 'Stangs at the St. Patrick gymnasium Saturday night. After trailing by eight points, St. Patrick used a 9-0 run to go ahead 57-56 with 3:37 to play. Bishop Brossart answered with a 7-0 run to lead 63-57. The Lady Saints got to within three at 63-60, but could get no closer. Four Lady Saints scored in double figures with Ciera Payne leading the way with 16 points. Boone Co. pulls away in 2nd half to beat Lady Royals 64-52

Boone County pulled away from upset-minded Mason County in the second half and the Lady Rebels beat the Lady Royals 64-52 tonight in the second game of the Pepsi-Mt. Classic at The Fieldhouse. Mason County led 40-36 in the third quarter, but Boone County ended the quarter on a 12-4 run. Then, the Lady Rebels outscored the Lady Royals 16-8 in the fourth quarter. The loss snaps the Lady Royals' three-game winning streak. Boone County sophomore Sydney Moss scored a game-high 29 points. Keller Menke led Mason County with 21 points. McKayla Likins scored 13 points. Katelyn Smith added 12 points. The Lady Royals play the Paris Lady Hounds Monday night at Paris.

Royals top Covington Catholic 60-51

The Mason County Royals used a 12-2 run at the end of the third quarter to beat the Covington Catholic Colonels 60-51 tonight in the Pepsi-Mt. Dew Classic at The Fieldhouse. The Royals sealed their fourth straight victory by making 8-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter. Justin Lang led Mason County in scoring with 15 points. Jordan Gilbert scored 14 points. Treg Setty added 10 points. The win is Coach Chris O' Hearn's 150th at Mason County. The Royals host Bishop Brossart Tuesday night.

Royals cruise to a 71-51 win over Harrison County

Playing their first game since Feb. 2, the Mason County Royals cruised to a 71-51 victory over the Harrison County Thorobreds tonight in Cynthiana. The Royals scored 26 points off 20 Harrison County turnovers. Mason County led by 16 at the half, and outscored Harrison County 14-3 in the third quarter. The Royals led by as many as 35 in the fourth quarter. Treg Setty led Mason County in scoring with 14 points. Justin Lang followed with 13 points. Neal Pawsat scored 11 points. Rheuben Bluford had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Mason County hosts Covington Catholic Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Saints rout Paris 93-51 on Homecoming

The St. Patrick Saints celebrated Homecoming with a 93-51 victory over the Paris Greyhounds tonight. Stephen Mason scored a game-high 32 points and moved past Josh Owens and Kelly Greenwell into eighth place on the Saints' all-time scoring list. Taylor Slack and Josh Newman scored 11 points apiece. Lee Gallenstein added 10 points. The Saints will be back in action Monday night at home against the West Union Dragons.

Boys' freshman 10th Region Tournament is Sunday at The Fieldhouse

The boys freshman 10th Region Tournament will be played Sunday at The Fieldhouse. Scott plays Mason County at 2 p.m. followed by Harrison County vs. Montgomery County. The winners will meet in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for students and is good for all day.

Mason County schedules boy-girl DH Saturday night

Mason County is making up a couple of postponed games with a boy-girl doubleheader Saturday night at The Fieldhouse. The Royals will play the Covington Catholic Colonels at 5:30, followed by the Lady Royals against the Boone County Lady Rebels at 7 p.m. The boys' game was originally scheduled last night. The girls' game was originally scheduled tomorrow night. The Saturday doubleheader games will be varsity only.

St. Patrick boys' and girls' games postponed

The West Union at St. Patrick boys' game is postponed tonight and rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 15. The St. Patrick at Harrison County girls' game is also postponed tonight. A makeup date has not been set.

Rowan County at Mason County boy-girl DH cancelled

The Rowan County at Mason County boy-girl doubleheader tonight has been cancelled. This is the second time it has been cancelled. The Mason County boys have not played since Feb. 2, and have only played two games in the last 15 days.

The Mason County Lady Royals ran their winning streak to three games with a 62-46 win over the Bourbon County Lady Colonels tonight in Paris. Keller Menke had a double-double with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Courtney Moran scored a career-high 12 points. Moran also had five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Mason County hosts Rowan County Wednesday night.

Six local college basketball players had games over the weekend. Here is how they did:
  • Wesley Jones had 16 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists to help Central State University rout Wilberforce 92-57. Jones was 4-of-4 on three-pointers;
  • Chris Owens scored 12 points and had three rebounds, two steals and one block for Transylvania in a 71-64 loss to Defiance;
  • De'Sarae Chambers had 10 points, three rebounds and one assist for the Dayton Flyers in a 72-54 victory over St. Louis;
  • Trevor Setty scored five points as Pikeville edged Lindsey Wilson 79-78;
  • Kasey Litzinger had two points, one rebound and one assist for Lindsey Wilson in a 65-61 win over Pikeville;
  • Darius Miller had three rebounds, three assists and two steals in Kentucky's 81-55 victory over LSU.

Mason County wins boys' frosh 39th District Tournament

Mason County won the boys' freshman 39th District Tournament today at Bracken County.
Mason County defeated Bracken County 44-33 in the championship game. Earlier in the day in the semifinals, Bracken County beat St. Patrick 49-41 in overtime and Mason County topped Augusta 57-32. Mason County will host the 10th Region Tournament.

Shorthanded Lady Saints defeat Bath County 52-40

The St. Patrick Lady Saints, playing without two starters, defeated the Bath County Lady Wildcats 52-40 tonight. Twins Ciera Payne and Charisma Payne missed the game after being in an automobile accident. The twins were not seriously injured. Chelsea Douglas led the Lady Saints with a game-high 18 points. Brooke Mosler added 15 points. St. Patrick plays at Clark County Monday night.

Mikah Turner scored 34 points to lead Berea College to a 126-100 win over Cincinnati Christian University Tuesday night. Turner played all 40 minutes. He was 15-of-21 from the field including 3-of-4 on three-point shots. Turner was 1-of-3 from the free throw line and had eight rebounds, two blocks, one steal and one assist.

Lady Saints defeat Pendleton County 62-46

Ciera Payne scored a career-high 22 points and Brooke Mosler had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the St. Patrick Lady Saints to a 62-46 victory over the Pendleton County Lady Wildcats at the St. Patrick gym Tuesday night. The Lady Saints travel to Vanceburg Thursday night to play the Lewis County Lady Lions.

Royals use 22-0 run to defeat Montgomery County 72-46

The Mason County Royals ended the second quarter on a 15-4 run and started the third quarter with a 22-0 run on their way to a 72-46 road win over the Montgomery County Indians tonight. Treg Setty played only 10:18 due to foul trouble but scored a game-high 17 points. Justin Lang scored a career-high 16 points. Ryne King added 11 points and Neal Pawsat tossed in 10 points. The Royals host the Clark County Cardinals Friday night.

St. Patrick uses big 4th quarter to beat Bracken Co. 79-68

The St. Patrick Saints outscored the Bracken County Polar Bears 28-17 in the fourth quarter to win 79-68 tonight in Brooksville. Taylor Slack scored a career-high 22 points for St. Patrick. Ryan Gallenstein scored 16 points. Lee Gallenstein followed with 13 points and Stephen Mason added 10 points. The Polar Bears beat the Saints twice earlier in the season including 67-42 in the 10th Region All "A" Classic on Jan. 20. St. Patrick (7-10) plays at Harrison County Saturday night.

Four Mason County football players have scholarship offers

Four Mason County football players have received scholarship offers. All four are seniors. Wide receiver/defensive back Malcolm Jones has been offered full tuition, room and board by New Mexico Institute Junior College. Wide receiver/defensive back Bradley Lang has an offer from Kentucky State University. Pikeville College has offered scholarships to wide receiver/defensive back Colt Fearis and running back/linebacker Akeem Jackson. Center Lee Sutton is being recruited by several colleges including Union and Hanover.

Turner scores 26 points in Berea College loss

Mikah Turner scored 26 points for Berea College in a 91-87 loss to Indiana University East Monday night. The Mountaineers play at Cincinnati Christian University tonight.
