Royals play first road game at Bourbon County

The Mason County Royals, coming off an open week, play their first road game of the season tonight in Paris against the Bourbon County Colonels. Both teams are 2-0. Mason County has wins over Danville and Montgomery County. Bourbon County has defeated Estill County and Casey County. The Colonels, a Class 4A team, have a new coach- Johnny Poynter- who was the defensive coordinator for Bourbon County's 1997 state championship team. Kickoff is at 7:30. Here are some game notes:






  • Bourbon County leads Class 4A in rushing (464 yards per game) and scoring defense (6 points per game);
  • Bourbon County running back Taylor Barnes has rushed for 415 yards and leads Class 4A with an average of 208 yards per game;
  • The Colonels have only thrown one pass this season;
  • Mason County quarterback Neal Pawsat has completed 20-of-26 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns. He has thrown two interceptions;
  • Mason County was 3-2 on the road last season;
  • Bourbon County leads the series 5-2. Mason County has won the last two meetings including 36-14 last season.
