The Mason County Royals play their home opener Friday night against the Class 6A Boone County Rebels. Here are a few notes about the two teams:
- This is the first time Mason County has played Boone County;
- The Royals were 3-2 at home last season;
- Boone County lost to Scott County 28-20 last week;
- Rebels coach Rick Thompson says senior tailback Cory Farris is probably Boone County's best running back since Shaun Alexander;
- Speaking of Alexander, Thompson says the NFL star stays in close contact with the Rebels' running backs and calls Farris fairly regularly. Thompson says Alexander takes 5 to 6 Boone County players to Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp every year;
- Farris has signed to play baseball at the University of Kentucky;
- Here is a link to a Cincinnati Post story on Boone County quarterback Shawn Bogle;
- Boone County was the state runnerup four times (1986, 1987, 1992, 1994) under legendary coach Owen Hauk, but has never won a state title in football;
- The 1987 team lost the state championship game 17-14 to a Shelby County team coached by former Maysville Bulldogs head coach Tom Becherer;
- Former Mason County boys basketball coach Allen Feldhaus was a football, basketball and baseball star at Boone County;
