Sweet 16 Underway

Adair County and Scott County were winners in the opening session of the 90th National City/KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16 today. Adair County appeared to be more relaxed than Lincoln County and won 51-41. Tournament favorite Scott County jumped all over Oldham County early in the game and led 36-15 at the half. Scott County coach Billy Hicks emptied his bench and the Cardinals won 59-47.

  • Philip Hay interviewed former Bracken County coach Robert Hammonds at halftime of the first game. Hammonds completed his first season as the coach at West Jessamine. I interviewed Tim Sullivan at halftime of the second game. Sullivan, who was the head coach at St. Patrick in the 2004-05 season and an assistant coach at Mason County last season, is an assistant coach at his alma mater, Holmes. The Holmes Bulldogs play Paducah Tilghman in the second game of tonight's session.
  • Kentucky coach Tubby Smith was at the games today.

South Laurel rallied from an eight point third quarter deficit to edge Fairdale 48-46 in the tonight' s first game. Holmes topped Paducah Tilghman 57-48.

  • Our halftime interviews tonight were with St. Patrick coach Jason Hinson and Augusta coach Robin Kelsch.
  • Pikeville College coach Kelly Wells is at the tournament. We hope to interview him tomorrow.
  • 10th Region champion Clark County plays 2nd Region champion Christian County in the second game tomorrow.
