I recorded my pre-game interview with Lawrence County football coach Billy Goldsmith this morning. It's always good to talk to Billy. He played football at Maysville High School and Morehead State. Lawrence County has been plaqued by injuries this season and will bring a 1-7 record into Friday night's game against the Mason County Royals. Goldmsith's son, Boone, was the starting quarterback before he suffered a knee injury. Boone Goldsmith, a freshman, recently had season-ending surgery. Billy had some great comments in the interview. He says he would have loved for the people he knows in Maysville to have had the chance to see Boone play. Coach Goldsmith says
he's glad Lawrence County and Mason County won't be playing each other anymore after this season. Goldsmith says because he's become such good friends with Mason County coach David Buchanan, he doesn't like playing the Royals anymore. Goldsmith was an assistant on Buchanan's Kentucky All-Star coaching staff in 2005. Billy has fond memories of his days as a Maysville Bulldog.
"I went through some winning times at Maysville football, went through some losin' times, but all the times I had there are great memories," he said.
Take your radio to the game Friday night to hear Billy's comments. We also talked about how coach Buchanan has included former Maysville players in the Royals' program. I plan on playing that part of the interview on the McDonald's High School Football Show Monday night.
Despite their record, the Lawrence County Bulldogs are still a dangerous team. I plan to blog more about the match-up later in the week.
