Laurel Oaks Ladies Two-Day Scramble set for July 12-13

July 12-13 are the dates for the Laurel Oaks Ladies Two-Day Scramble.

Bring your own partner. The field will be flighted based on first round scores. There will be a skins game both days, a fixed calcutta, hole prizes, door prizes and a Saturday evening dinner.

42nd Annual Knights of Columbus Joe Donovan Memorial Run is a week away

The 42nd Annual Knights of Columbus Joe Donovan Memorial River Run is a week away.

The event, which includes a 3.1-mile run and a two-mile walk, kicks off Maysville's Independence Day celebration at 8 a.m.

The race begins and ends on McDonald Parkway at Limestone Landing. The route goes westbound on McDonald Parkway, West Second Street and Kentucky 8. The turnaround is just west of Plugtown.

Trophies will be presented to the top 3 male and female participants overall in the 3.1-mile run and top 2 male and female walkers, medals to the top 3 male and female participants of each division in the 5K run, top 3 in the wheelchair division, and top 3 Big Man participants.   

All pre-registrants will receive a T-shirt (day of race registrants will receive a T-shirt as available).  The cost of the race is $25 for 18 and over, and $20 for under 18 years of age.  Make checks payable to Knights of Columbus.  Mail to:  Kelly Ashley, 508 E Second St, Maysville, KY  41056.

Sign-ups underway for the 58th Firecracker tournament at KSGC

Sign-ups are underway for the 58th Firecracker tournament at Kenton Station Golf Course.

The 36-hole stroke play tournament is scheduled July 5-6. A shootout will be held on July 4.

The entry fee is $90 for members and $110 for non-members.

Middleton and Hogge win Fleming County Golf Association Two-Man Scramble

Trey Middleton and Logan Hogge shot a 15-under 57 on Sunday and won the Fleming County Golf Association Two- Man Scramble with a 36-hole total of 26-under 118.

Jordan Hughes and Logan Hughes finished second at 119. The teams of Bryan Walton/Trey Cracraft and Seth Hickerson/Landon Lutz tied for third place at 121.

KHSAA "Dead Period" begins on Wednesday

The KHSAA mandatory "Dead Period" begins on Wednesday and runs through July 9.

The two-week break prohibits the use of school facilities, equipment, uniforms and transportation.

Coaches are prohibited from communicating with athletes by any means.

Crabtree wins junior golf tournament in Richmond

Jaxen Crabtree, a rising senior at Mason County, won the boys' 16-18 division of the SEAY Motors One-Day Series tournament at Boone's Trace National Golf Club in Richmond on Monday.

Crabtree shot a one-over 73 for a six-shot win. 

SEAY Motors is the title sponsor for 14 KPGA one-day tournaments this year.

Kenzie Gulley named All-State Honorable Mention

2025 Mason County graduate Kenzie Gulley has been named Class 2A All-State Honorable Mention by the Kentucky High School Softball Coaches Association.

Despite missing almost a third of the season with an injury, Gulley, a Thomas More University signee, batted .540 with four doubles, five triples, two home runs and nine RBI. She stole 19 bases in 20 attempts and scored 17 runs.

Four course records broken at Buffalo Trace Stampede

Four course records were broken at the Buffalo Trace Stampede on Saturday in downtown Maysville.

Jed Helker of Cincinnati was the overall winner of the one-mile race in a record time of 4:14.37.

Steven Buck of Lexington set a new record in the male Masters (40 and over) division with a time of 4:51.

Lucy Singleton of Waynesburg, Kentucky was the female winner with a record-setting time of 5:00.66.

Jessica Miller of Louisville was the third overall female finisher and set a new record for the female Masters (6:21.85).

St. Patrick accepting applications for girls' and boys' soccer coaches

St. Patrick is accepting applications for the girls' and boys' soccer coaching positions.

According to a post on St. Patrick's Facebook page, Father Michael Black, who coached both teams, will start a new assignment in Northern Kentucky on July 1.

The Facebook page said. "Special thanks to a Father Black for his dedication to the Lady Saints and Saints soccer programs and to St. Patrick school for the past 10 years."

10th Region Baseball HOF and Awards Banquet and 10th Region Baseball and Softball All-Star Games are set for June 17

The 10th Region Baseball Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet and the 10th Region Baseball and Softball All-Star Games, organized by 10th Region.com, are scheduled on Tuesday, June 17 at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester.

The banquet will begin at 5:30 p.m in the GRC cafeteria. The members of the first Hall of Fame Class will be introduced first followed by the All-Region teams and award winners.

The Softball All-Star Game will start at 6:30 p.m. The first pitch for the Baseball All-Star Game is scheduled at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $5. Students in grade 12 and under and assistant coaches will be admitted free. Tickets will be available on GRC's Go Fan page.

Mason County track and field coach Mark Kachler announces his retirement

Mason Couny track and field coach Mark Kachler has announced his retirement.

Here is the news release from the Mason County High School Athletic Department:

Maysville Ky— Longtime Boys and Girls Track and Field Coach, Mark Kachler, has announced his retirement from coaching.  Coach Kachler

informed the students, parents and school administration of his intention yesterday.  Coach K’s long and decorated career began in

2000 when he took over the Boys and Girls Cross Country programs at Mason County High School.  During his tenure, a Mason

County High School female would win the individual region championship seven times and his teams would accumulate ten region

championships. At the state level his Cross Country teams finished fourth place or higher six times.  These six podium finishes

included a run from 2018 through 2022 where Mason County would finish on the podium five consecutive years at the KHSAA

State Championships. Coach Kachler coached ten state meet medalists and thirty-one all state cross country athletes. In 2014-15

he was named a national finalist for the Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year.  He would remain as head coach for twenty three

seasons, resigning in 2022 from leading our cross country teams.In 2004 Coach Kachler began leading both the boys and girls track teams at Mason County.  The numerous accolades of his

track athletes and teams include the following: 15 Regional Team Championships (12 female, 3 male), 104 Individual Champions,

52 Regional Relay Champions, 4 Indoor State Team Championships, 12 Indoor State Team Runners-Up, 22 Indoor State Individual

Champions and 12, Indoor State Relay Champions, 3 Outdoor State Top 4 Team Finishes, 9 Outdoor State Individual Champions,

2 Outdoor State Relay Champions and 116 All State Award Winners.  In 2019-2020 Coach Kachler was named the Kentucky Girls

Track and Field Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High Schools. On behalf of the Mason County High School Athletic Department and School Administration we would like to extend a huge

thanks to Coach Kachler for all of his time and effort leading the Royals to be one of the most respected Cross County and Track &

Field programs in the state.  Coach K, congratulations on your retirement!The Mason County Athletic Department will begin a search for a new Track and Field Head Coach,  immediately.  All interested

A tie for first place in the Championship Flight of Two-Man Scramble at KSCG

Eight holes of a sudden-death playoff were not enough to decide a winner before darkness set in, so the Championship Flight of theTwo-Man Scramble at Kenton Station Golf Course ended with a tie for first place on Sunday.

The father-son duo of Eric Schumacher and Evan Schumacher and the defending champion team of Brady South and Matt Malott ended regulation play tied with a 36-hole score of 23 under 117. 

Both teams played the first eight playoff holes at five under. It was too dark to play No. 9.

Josh Gilliam and Jeff Martin finished in third place at 22 under 118.

Halle Pfeffer places eighth in Turbo Javelin Kentucky Championship

Mason County rising senior Halle Pfeffer placed eighth in the Turbo Javelin Kentucky Championship on Saturday at Bishop Brossart.

The top 24 male and female Turbo Javelin throwers in Kentucky were invited to the event. There were three throws with the top nine girls and boys qualifying for the finals.

The winners received a trophy. Places second through eighth received a medal.

The Mason County Royals will play two more games at the Lady Royals Gym on Thursday as two Ohio teams come to town for summer basketball. Here is the schedule:

Seven Mason County track and field athletes receive All-State recognition

Seven Mason County track and field athletes have received All-State recognition from the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association based on their state meet performances.

Lexi Young (high jump, long jump and triple jump) and Ava Thompson (pole vault) were named First Team All-State.

Young (100 meter dash), Sarah Payne (pole vault and 400 meter dash) and the girls' 4x100 meter relay team of Amirah Reed, Haven Hamilton, Adrienne Downs-Perry and Madison Howard were named Second Team All-State.

Highlights from Mason County indoor and outdoor track and field seasons

Mason County track and field coach Mark Kachler has compiled a list of the teams' accomplishments during the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Ava Thompson (pole vault) and Trazon Lang (high jump) won individual indoor state championships.

  • The Lady Royals won the outdoor region championship for the sixth straight time and the 12th time in program history, and the Royals were region runners-up.

  • The Lady Royals finished third at the outdoor championships and Lexi Young (triple jump and high jump) and Ava Thompson (pole vault) won individual outdoor state championships.

  • During the indoor and outdoor seasons, Mason County athletes set 27 school records, either as individuals or relay teams—18 by the girls and nine by the boys.

Martin and Epperson win The Commonwealth Cup for the third time

Jeremy Martin and Matt Epperson won the The Commonwealth Cup Two-Man Tournament at Laurel Oaks Golf Course for the third time on Sunday.

Martin and Epperson had a 36-hole score of 19-under 125. 

Logan Hogge and Blake Cartwight finished second at 128. The team of Logan Liles and Mark Moore, and the two-time defending champions, Justin Warman and Luke Fuller, tied for third place at 129.

Martin and Epperson also won the tournament in 2021 and 2022.

The tournament uses a unique format: best ball for holes 1-6, scramble for holes 7-12 and alternate shot for holes 13-18 in both rounds.
