Royals lose to Campbell County 73-54

The shorthanded Mason County Royals hung with Campbell County for three quarters, but were outscored 26-15 in the fourth quarter and lost to the Camels 73-54 on Tuesday night in Claryville.

Royals senior Cole Horch, the team's top rebounder and second leading scorer, missed the game due to illness.

Mason County scored the first five points of the game, but Campbell County responded with an 18-2 run.

The Camels led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter. The Royals closed the gap to five at halftime and got to within two points in the third quarter. 

Campbell County was up 47-39 at the end of the third quarter and led by as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter.

Austin Davie poured in a game-high 27 points for Campbell County. Xavier Fancher scored 19 and Garyn Jackson added 15 for the Camels who ran their record to 11-3.

Braeden Myrick scored 22 points and Garryon McClain tossed in 19 for the Royals who suffered their fourth straight loss and fell to 6-6.

Campbell County shot 50% from the field compared to 38.9% for Mason County. Both teams struggled from 3-point range. Campbell County was 2-for-13 and Mason County was 3-for-15.

Mason County will play St. Patrick on Thursday night at the Lady Royals Gym.

Harlan County beats Campbell County in OT

South Carolina signee Trent Noah scored 48 points and Harlan County rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat Campbell County 85-71 win in overtime on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the UK Heathcare Boys Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

Noah was 16-of-23 from the field, 7-of-10 from 3-point range, 9-of-9 on free throws and pulled down nine rebounds.

Maddox Huff added 22 points and nine rebounds for Harlan County.

Broc Sorgenfrei led Campbell County with 17 points. Garyn Jackson followed with 16 points and Nathan Smith tossed in 12.

The Camels led 52-36 with 2:18 left in the third quarter and 57-44 with 7:48 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Noah made a 3-pointer to tie the score at 69-all with 45 seconds left in regulation.

Campbell County missed a 3-point attempt with nine seconds on the clock.

The Black Bears opened the extra period on a 13-0 run and outscored the Camels 16-2 in overtime.

The loss snapped Campbell County's 13-game winning streak. The Camels ended the season with a 27-7 record.

Campbell County beats Newport 43-40 in the opening round of the state tournament

Broc Sorgenfrei scored 12 points and Garyn Jackson had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead Campbell County to a 43-40 win over Newport on Thursday night in the opening round of the UK Heathcare Boys Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

Connor Weinel added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Camels who ran their winning streak to 13 games.

The loss snapped Newport's 24-game winning streak. The Wildcats ended the season with a 32-4 record.

Campbell County (27-6) will play Harlan County in the quarterfinals on Friday at 6 p.m.

Campbell County edges Harrison County on a buzzer-beater 3-pointer in OT for region title

Garyn Jackson made a buzzer-beater 3-pointer from the right wing to give the Campbell County Camels a 64-63 win over the Harrison County Thorobreds in overtime on Tuesday night in the championship game of the 10th Region Tournament at The Fieldhouse.

Campbell County led 32-17 in the second quarter and was up 36-27 at halftime. 

The Camels led 52-42 early in the fourth quarter. Harrison County reeled off 11 straight points to lead 53-52, but Campbell County answered with a 5-0 run.

The Camels missed four straight free throws in the final minute of regulation. The Thorobreds tied the score at 57-all on a Kaydon Custard basket with two seconds left.

Custard scored all six of Harrison County's points in the extra period.

Jackson had only scored two points before sinking the game-winning basket. Jackson got the ball back after inbounding it in frontcourt coming out of a timeout with 6.3 seconds on the clock.  

Connor Weinel led Campbell County (26-6) with a 26-point, 11-rebound double-double. Broc Sorgenfrei added 13 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Harrison County (17-15) was led by Elijah Harris with 22 points. Custard finished with 13 points and Justin Cracraft contributed 10 points.

Campbell County will play cross-county foe Newport in the opening round of the UK Healthcare Boys' Sweet 16 on March 21 at 8:30 p.m. at Rupp Arena. Newport beat Cooper 46-39 in the championship game of the 9th Region Tournament.

Harrison County and Campbell County win semifinal games in 10th Region Tournament

Kaydon Custard poured in 34 points to lead the Harrison County Thorobreds to a 65-51 win over the Mason County Royals and Broc Sorgenfrei scored 24 points to lead the Campbell County Camels to a 75-62 victory over the George Rogers Clark Cardinals in the semifinals of the 10th Region Tournament at The Fieldhouse on Monday night.

Custard was 12-of-21 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free throw line and finished with nine rebounds. Elijah Harris added 17 points for the Thorobreds (17-14) who advanced to the finals for the first time since 1999.

Jake Feldhaus had a double-double for Mason County (21-12) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Landon Scilley had 11 points and five rebounds. Braeden Myrick tossed in 10 points.

Harrison County outrebounded Mason County 37-21 and had a 14-4 advantage on second-chance points.

Campbell County (25-6) led 44-27 at halftime on their way to snapping GRC's 65-game winning streak vs. 10th Region opponents. The Cardinals were the four-time defending champions.

Garyn Jackson scored 23 points and Connor Weinel had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Camels who ran their winning streak to 11 games.

Rashaun Hampton and JP Gaines scored 20 points each for GRC. Gaines also grabbed nine rebounds. Gay added 12 points.

Feldhaus, Scilley, Hampton and Gaines were named to the All-Tournament Team.
