Lady Royals defeat Augusta and Bracken County for second straight district championship

The Mason County Lady Royals won the 39th District Tournament for the second straight year by defeating the Augusta Panthers 16-0 in the semifinals and the Bracken County Lady Bears 7-6 in the championship game on Monday at the Tom Browning Boys and Girls Club.

The tournament, originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday, was moved up because of the forecast for rain.

Kenzie Gulley led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run in the semifinal game. The Lady Royals scored 11 runs in the first inning and five in the second inning.

Mason County led 6-0 in the middle of the fifth inning in the championship game. Bracken County scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Lady Royals added an insurance run the sixth inning. The Lady Bears made it interesting with four runs in the bottom of the sixth and threatened in the bottom of the seventh before stranding two base runners.

Mason County and Augusta both move on to the 10th Region Tournament.
