Mason County made two defensive stops in the final four minutes and the Royals won their district opener over Boyd County 19-14 Friday night in Cannonsburg. The Royals led 13-0 on a couple of touchdowns by Chase Crawford. He scored on a 63 yard pass from Richie Cox in the first quarter and on a 32 yard run on a reverse in the second quarter. Boyd County took a brief lead of 14-13 early in the fourth quarter, but the Royals went back on top on a 20 yard touchdown run by Chris Marshall. Boyd County was thrown for a loss on a fouth down play on its next to last possession. The Royals looked like they were going to be able to run out the clock, but facing 4th and one from the Boyd County 10 yard line, they were called for illegal procedure and ended up giving the ball back to the Lions on downs with :50 seconds left in the game. Royals safety Tony Browning intercepted a Boyd County pass to seal Mason County's fifth straight win. The Royals, now 5-1. host Ashland friday night.
