Lady Royals region champions for the first time

The Mason County girls' track and field team won the regional championship for the first time in school history Friday night. The Lady Royals upset Russell by 11 points in the Class 2A Region 6 meet at Rowan County. Mason County finished in third place in the boys' meet. The Mason County girls had lost to Russell three times in the final two weeks of the regular season.
"We opened the night with one of the most exciting finishes to a 4x800 meter relay that I have ever witnessed when Julia Woods came from 15 meters back on the last lap to out lean Russell and Ashland at the line," Coach Mark Kachler wrote in an e-mail message. "That set the tone for the whole team the rest of the night. Everyone on the team contributed in everyway possible." The Mason County boys won every sprint and relay event. Brandon Jackson had a personal best in the long jump (20-02.00).
"The boys performed great tonight," Kachler wrote in the e-mail message. "We have some holes to fill as a team which cost us a chance at the team title but what we do, we do it really well. I look forward to them excelling in the state meet next week."
