Lady Royals region runners-up, qualify for state
The Mason County Lady Royals were the runners-up in the girls Region 8 golf tournament today at Houston Oaks Golf Club in Paris and qualified for the state tournament. The Lady Royals had a team total of 405 and were led by Tiara Harris with a 91 and Lauren Vice with a 96. The girls state tournament is Oct. 8-10 at Bowling Green Country Club.
Mason Co. boys golf team and St. Patrick's Rigg qualify for state
The Mason County boys golf team and St. Patrick junior Russell Rigg qualified for the state golf tournament with second place finishes today in the Region 8 tournament at Eagle Creek Country Club in Crittenden. Mason County had a team total of 325, 13 shots behind the champion, Pendleton County, and one shot ahead of Harrison County. The top two teams advance to the state tournament. Russell Rigg shot a 73 and took second place by winning the first hole of a sudden death playoff. Zach Wright of Pendleton County won the individual title with a 71.
Mason County was led by Bradley Litzinger with a 76. Tanner Walton shot a 79. Eric White had an 82, Jackson Frame an 88 and Josh Harris a 91. The top four scores are used for the team total. St. Patrick had a team total of 370. The boys state golf tournament is Oct. 5-7 at Bowling Green Country Club.

Josh Harris is Mason County's Red Zone Player of the Week
Sophomore tailback/linebacker Josh Harris is Mason County's Red Zone Player of the Week. Harris ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries in the Royals' 30-16 win over Harrison County Friday night. He also had two receptions for 38 yards and made three tackles.
Every week, one player is selected as the Red Zone Player of the Week at each participating high school. At the end of the season, one player from each school will be nominated to represent their team for possible selection as a national finalist. The Red Zone Player of the Year program is nationally sponsored by Procter & Gamble Old Spice® Red Zone Deodorant.

Mason Co. girls 21st, boys 27th at Franklin County
The Mason County girls cross country team finished 21st and the Mason County boys were 27th in the Franklin County Invitational Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park. Julia Woods led the Lady Royals with a 14th place finish (21:27.17, and Nick Robinson had the Royals' best finish- 70th- in a time of 19:15.57.

Lady Saints beat Augusta 2-0
The St. Patrick Lady Saints beat the Augusta Lady Panthers 2-0 Friday night for their second consecutive victory. The scores were 25-19 and 25-14. Royals beat 'Breds 30-16 in the rain, now 5-0
Josh Harris ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns and the Mason County Royals defeated the Harrison County Thorobreds 30-16 in the rain tonight in Cynthiana. Jordan Gilbert kicked a school-record 40 yard field and had a 33 yard touchdown reception. The Royals' defense came up with two takeaways in the second half. Harrison County had 2nd-and-goal from the one on the opening drive of the second half, but fumbled and Clay Cartmell recovered. On the Thorobreds' next series, they fumbled the snap and Corey Jones came up with his fourth fumble recovery of the season. Four plays later, the Royals scored the only touchdown of the second half. It is Mason County's first win over Harrison County. The Royals (5-0) play their district opener Friday night at Lewis County.

Lady Royals second in CKC Tournament
The Mason County girls golf team finished second in the Central Kentucky Conference 9-Hole Tournament Thursday evening at Laurel Oaks Golf Club. The tournament was played in a driving rain. Grant County won the tournament with a total of 170. The Lady Royals were nine shots back. Christen Cropper tied for third with a 43. Royals play the 'Breds in Cynthiana tonight
The Mason County Royals travel to Cynthiana tonight to play the Class 4A Harrison County Thorobreds. Mason County (4-0) is coming off a 28-26 win over the Rowan County Vikings. Harrison County (2-2) lost to Montgomery County 27-26 in the Recreation Bowl, posted back-to-back wins over Paris (35-14) and Newport (20-14) and lost to Scott 36-30 last week after jumping out to an 18-0 lead. The Thorobreds are led by a couple of seniors- wide receiver/defensive back Malcolm Thomas and running back Josh Moss. Mason County Coach David Buchanan says Harrison County has "some really nice skilled talent that can score from anywhere on the field." Mark Carroll is in his first season as the head coach at Harrison County. Kickoff is at 7:30. Here are some game notes:
- Mason County sophomore Josh Harris won the Royals' Big Hit Award for the tackle he made on the opening kickoff last week;
- Harrison County has a new athletic complex. Parking near the new field is limited. A shuttle service will be provided from the Harrison County High School student parking lot beginning at 6:45 p.m. Check out Monday's blog entry for the details;

Lady Saints beat Lady Royals 3-1
The St. Patrick Lady Saints ran their unbeaten streak to 10 games with a 3-1 win over the Mason County Lady Royals tonight at the Tom Browning Boys and Girls Club. St. Patrick (9-2-2) plays St. Henry in the Class A State Cup Sunday at 3 p.m. in Frankfort. Mason County (3-6-3) hosts Bryan Station Wednesday.
Mason Co. boys crack the XC rankings, girls move to 8th
The Mason County boys cross country team is ranked for the first time this season. The Royals crack the KYtrackxc.com Class AA rankings at No. 9. The Mason County girls moved up two spots 8th. Mason County freshman Julia Woods is 9th in the Class AA girls individual rankings. The rankings are released every two weeks. Here is a link to the latest rankings.

Royals end regular season with a win over Paris at Laurel Oaks
The Mason County boys golf team ended the regular season today with a 163-197 win over Paris on the back nine at Laurel Oaks Golf Club. Tanner Walton was the medalist with a 2-over-par 38. Josh Harris was next with a 41. Jackson Frame, Eric White and Connor Osborne each shot a 42. The Royals head to the regional tournament Monday at Eagle Creek Golf Course in Grant County with a 10-1 record.

Shuttle service for Mason Co. at Harrison Co. football game
The Mason County Royals play the Harrison County Thorobreds in Cynthiana Friday at 7:30 p.m. Harrison County has a new athletic complex and some of the parking lots are a long way from the field. The school will provide a shuttle service for the fans. Here is the press release:
A shuttle service will be available for the Harrison County – Mason County Varsity Football game beginning at 7:30 p.m. on September 25, 2009, at the New Harrison County Athletic Complex.
A shuttle bus will be located at the drive between Ingles Stadium and the Harrison County High School student parking lot. Shuttle service will begin at 6:45 p.m. The shuttle will leave every 15 minutes taking patrons to the Athletic Complex. The final bus run is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. for late arrivers.
Approximately 10 minutes after the game, the shuttle will pick up fans at the South gate near the water tower to take them back to the High School student lot. A second run will be made if needed.

Royals tie for third in Grant Co. Tournament
The Mason County boys golf team tied for third place out of 24 teams in the Grant County Tournament at Eagle Creek Golf Course. The Royals had a season-low team score of 310, 16 shots behind the winning team, Scott County. Mason County was led by Bradley Litzinger with a 1-over-par 73. He finished in sixth place. Tanner Walton shot a 74 and finished in eighth place. Litzinger and Walton both received All-State points for their individual scores in the tournament.
Mason Co. 8th Grade girls win Rowan Co. Tournament
The Mason County 8th grade girls basketball team won the Rowan County Middle School tournament this past weekend. They ran their record to 14-4 on the season with three wins.
The Lady Royals defeated Bath County 54-22 in the opening round. McKenzie Butler led the way with 17 points and Elle Simms added 11 points. Mason County beat Rowan County 37-12 in the semifinals. Butler scored 16 points and Simms tossed in 10 points. In the championship game, Butler scored 22 points and Simms added 16 as the Lady Royals defeated Bracken County 44-26. Mason County plays McNabb Tuesday night in Mt. Sterling. Here are the box scores from the tournament:

Jordan Gilbert is the Red Zone Player of the Week at Mason County
Junior wide receiver/kicker Jordan Gilbert is the Red Zone Player of the Week at Mason County. Gilbert had eight receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown and was 4-of-4 on PATs in the Royals' 28-26 win over Rowan County Friday night. Here is a press release about the Red Zone Player of the Year program:
The Red Zone Player of the Year program is designed to recognize varsity high school football players showing outstanding athletic performance, strong leadership, and the will to win in the Red Zone. These players are selected on their ability to elevate their own game, as well as the game of their teammates. Every week, one player is selected as the Red Zone Player of the Week at each participating high school. At the end of the season, one player from each school will be nominated to represent their team for possible selection as a national finalist. From these local nominations, the Red Zone Player of the Year Awards Committee will select 50 finalists to be announced in February 2010 to coincide with national letter of intent signing day.
This is the ninth year for this unique and inspiring program. The Red Zone Player of the Year program is nationally sponsored by Procter & Gamble Old Spice® Red Zone Deodorant. The program is created and managed by 360 Youth, LLC, an Alloy company.

Lady Saints advance in State Cup, Saints lose in 1st round
The St. Patrick Lady Saints shutout the Kentucky Country Day Bearcats 3-0 today in the Class A State Cup. The Lady Saints play the St. Henry Crusader Sunday at 3 p.m. at Sower Field in Frankfort. The Saints lost to the Danville Admirals 5-1.

Royals hang on for 28-26 win over Rowan County
The Mason County Royals made two defensive stops in the closing seconds to edge the Rowan County Vikings 28-26 on Homecoming tonight. Rowan County had 2nd-and-two on the Royals' 23 yard line when Gus Bauer and Tyler Black combined to sack Vikings quarterback Adam Wing for an 18 yard loss. On the final play, as time ran out, Wing's Hail Mary pass was batted away by Brad Lang. Mason County led 28-20 early in the fourth quarter. Wing scored on a five yard run to cut the Royals' lead to two, but Wing was stopped on the conversion run. Mason County was unable to run out the clock, but the defense came up big at the end. Mason County quarterback Neal Pawsat completed 18 of 28 passes for a career-high 268 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Gilbert had eight receptions for 137 yards (both are career highs) and a touchdown. Gilbert also scored a rushing touchdown on a reverse. Lang made a spectacular catch over a defensive back for a touchdown.
Josh Harris used a spin move to break a tackle and score on a 23 yard run.
Rowan County tailback Darrell Cross rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

Kyle Thompson and Tanner Walton each scored a goal as the Mason County Royals blanked the Owen County Raiders 2-0 Thursday evening. Jake Morgan and Dylan Whitehead each had an asssist. Jesse Foister recorded his fifth shutout. The Royals (7-3-2) play at West Union Monday.

The Mason County girls golf team beat Bourbon County by 50 shots on the back nine at Houston Oaks Golf Club in Paris Wednesday. The Lady Royals were led by Lauren Vice with a 44 and Tiara Harris with a 48. The Lady Royals are 12-0.
Saints beat Silver Grove at Flagg Springs
The St. Patrick golf team beat Silver Grove 188-224 on the front nine at Flagg Springs Golf Course Tuesday. Russell Rigg led the way with a 37 and drove No. 7, a downhill 398 yard par 4. Harrison Appplegate was next with a 47.
Mason Co. hosts Rowan Co. on Homecoming
The Mason County Royals host the Rowan County Vikings tonight on Homecoming. Mason County is 3-0. Rowan County, a Class 4A team, is 3-1 with victories over Morgan County (60-6), Estill County (63-7) and Fleming County (56-26). The Vikings lost to Garrard County 41-35 in the Death Valley Bowl at Lincoln County. Mason County is coming off a 43-14 win over the Bourbon County Colonels. Rowan County is led by running back Darrell Cross who has rushed for 616 yards and six touchdowns. Cross has returned a kickoff or a punt in each game this season. He has returned both a kickoff and punt in two games. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Homecoming festivities will take place at halftime. The tailgate party is from 5 to 7 pm. The menu includes Deshas chili and cornbread, pimento cheese sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches, desserts and a drink. - Rowan County is second in Class 4A in scoring (53.5 ppg), second in scoring margin (33.5 ppg), third in rushing (333 yards per game), first in passing defensive (38 yards per game)and ninth in passing (92 yards per game);
- Cross leads the state (all six classes) in scoring (19.5 ppg) and is fourth in rushing in Class 4A (154 yards per game)
- Rowan County leads the series 15-7. Mason County has won the last five meetings.

St.Patrick girls and boys teams headed to Class A Soccer Cup
The St. Patrick girls and boys soccer teams will play in the Class A State Cup Saturday at the Sower Soccer Fields in Frankfort. The St. Patrick teams won the Region 11/12 titles. The Lady Saints play Kentucky Country Day at 1 p.m. on Field 2. The Saints play Danville at 3 p.m. on Field 2. Here is a link to the tournament website.
Mason Co. boys and girls golf teams win at Fleming Co.
The Mason County boys golf team improved to 8-1 with a one shot victory (159-160) over Fleming County Wednesday at Fleming Country Club. Bradley Litzinger was the medalist with a 37. Jackson Frame shot a 38.

Mason County girls and boys win 5K races Tuesday
The Mason County girls and boys cross country teams both won the 5K races in the Mason County All-Comers Tuesday. The Lady Royals took the top four places- Julia Woods, Raylee Kirkland, Sara Bellingham and Cara Woods. Two other Lady Royals had top 10 finishes-Samantha Grayson (6th) and Carley Moore (10th). Sarah Todd of St. Patrick finished in 11th place. Mason County senior Jim Meyers won the boys' race. Five other Royals finished in the top 10- Nick Robinson (3rd), Nathan Woods (4th), Dillon Banks (6th), Connor Appelman (9th) and Seth Adkins (10th). Here is a link to the complete results.
Mason Co. splits girl-boy doubleheader with East Carter
Mason County and East Carter split a girl-boy doubleheader Tuesday night at Mason County. The Lady Royals lost to the Lady Raiders 4-1. Jessica Shotwell scored Mason County's goal on an assist from Alyssa Price. The Lady Royals (3-4-2) play at Fleming County Thursday.

Mason Co. boys 4th in Bluegrass Conference Tournament
The Mason County boys golf team finished in fourth place Monday in the Bluegrass Conference Tournament at Cynthiana Country Club. The Royals were lead by Bradley Litzinger with a 3-over-par 39 and Conner Osborne with a 40.

The Mason County Royals are still second in the Bluegrasspreps.com Class 3A Football Rankings despite three losses by top ranked Central. The two-time defending station champions have played a tough schedule. In fact, Central's first six opponents are Class 6A schools. The Mason County 8th grade girls basketball team took third place in the Paris Invitational Tournament over the weekend. The Lady Royals defeated Estill County in opening round, lost to eventual champion Bracken County in the semifinals and beat Paris in the third place game. The Lady Royals beat Bracken County 32-25 Monday night at The Fieldhouse. Elle Simms led Mason County is scoring with 12 points. Charnelle Brooks had 16 rebounds. Mason County plays Clark Middle School Thursday night in Winchester.

- Mason County senior goalkeeper Jesse Foister is tied for 5th in shutouts (3)
- The St. Patrick Saints are tied for sixth in goals per game (4.6)and are tied for 10th in margin of victory (3.3)
- St. Patrick senior goalkeeper Stephen Mason is tied for 11th in shutouts (2)
- St. Patrick senior fullback Cody Burton is tied for 12th place in assists (7)
Lady Royals 9th in Bowling Green tournament
The Mason County girls golf team finished ninth out of 24 teams in a tournament at the Bowling Green Country Club. Mason County had a total of 363, nine shots ahead of region favorite Scott County. The Lady Royals were lead by Christen Cropper with an 84 and Tiara Harris with an 86.
Mason Co. cross country teams 2nd at Bethel-Tate
The Mason County girls and boys cross country teams both finished second in the Bethel-Tate Invitational Saturday. Julia Woods led the girls with a fourth place finish. Raylee Kirkland also medalled by finishing ninth. Jim Myers led the Royals with a fourth place finish. Eighth grader Nick Robinson was fourth in the boys middle school meet. Catching up with the local college athletes
Several local athletes are playing college sports this fall. Here is an update on a few of them. If you know someone I left out, send me an e-mail.
- Rebecca Batey had two goals as Asbury College rallied to beat Taylor University 4-3 Friday. She scored the Eagles' only goal in a 2-1 loss to Indiana Wesleyan Saturday night. Batey has started all seven of Asbury's games and has scored a team-high seven goals. Her twin sister, Jessica, has started three games and has one assist;
- Jackson Tolle had four tackles before suffering a pulled hamstring in the first quarter of the Georgetown College Tigers' 31-21 loss to University of the Cumberlands;
- Terrence Breckenridge has made the traveling squad for the Campbellsville University football team;
- Cheryl Rutherford has transferred to Indiana University East in Richmond, IN for her junior year. She will play for the first-year IU East women's tennis program. Rutherford played on two national championship basketball teams at Kentucky Christian University;

Rigg ties for 12th at All "A" Classic
St. Patrick junior Russell Rigg shot a 4-over-par 76 today at Arlington Golf Club in Richmond and tied for 12th place in the All "A" Classic boys state golf championship. Rigg qualified for the tournament by finishing third in the All "A" regional tournament.

Mason Co. rolls past Bourbon County 43-14
The Mason County Royals continued their big play trend in a 43-14 win over the Bourbon County Colonels in Paris tonight. Josh Harris scored on the first play of the game on a 64 yard run. Neal Pawsat completed 11-of-15 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns. Malcolm Jones scored three touchdowns (two receiving and an 87 yard interception return). Cory Jones returned a fumble 43 yards for a touchdown. Bourbon County running back Taylor Barnes rushed for 236 yards on 39 carries and scored a touchdown. Mason County (3-0) hosts Rowan County Friday night.

Edward Jimenez scored two goals and had an assist, Zerubabel Oluweremi scored two goals and Cody Jodrey scored a goal and had an assist as the St. Patrick Saints defeated the Mason County Royals 5-1 Thursday night at Mason County. Cody Burton had two assists for the Saints. Dylan Whitehead scored Mason County's only goal with an assist by Robert Poe. St. Patrick (6-1-1) plays at Ripley at Wednesday. Jessica Shotwell scored two goals and Ashley Deatley had a goal and an assist to lead the Mason County Lady Royals to a 3-2 road win over the Greenup County Musketeers Thursday night.

Royals play first road game at Bourbon County
The Mason County Royals, coming off an open week, play their first road game of the season tonight in Paris against the Bourbon County Colonels. Both teams are 2-0. Mason County has wins over Danville and Montgomery County. Bourbon County has defeated Estill County and Casey County. The Colonels, a Class 4A team, have a new coach- Johnny Poynter- who was the defensive coordinator for Bourbon County's 1997 state championship team. Kickoff is at 7:30. Here are some game notes:
- Bourbon County leads Class 4A in rushing (464 yards per game) and scoring defense (6 points per game);
- Bourbon County running back Taylor Barnes has rushed for 415 yards and leads Class 4A with an average of 208 yards per game;

Royals are Team of the Week on Scholastic Ball Report
The Mason County Royals football team is the "Team of the Week" on the Scholastic Ball Report TV show. Coach David Buchanan and players Malcolm Jones, Lee Sutton, Brad Lang and Kirk Sweeney traveled to Lexington Wednesday night to tape the segment with the show's co-hosts, Gary Ball and Louis Stout. The Scholastic Ball Report airs Saturday at 11:30 a.m. on WKYT.

Lady Royals win MCIT Friday at MCC
The Mason County Lady Royals won the Mason County Invitational Tournament Friday at the Maysville Country Club. Christen Cropper led the way for the Lady Royals with a 39 (1st runner-up). Tiara Harris was next with a 40 (2nd runner-up) and Bridgit Morris was the 3rd runner-up with a 42. Bethany Foister took 7th place with a 48. Mason County 2nd, boys 4th at Fairview XC meet
The Mason County Lady Royals finished second and the Royals took fourth place in the opening meet of the season- the Fairview Invitational Saturday. Mason County freshman Julia Woods finished 2nd in a time of 21:20.40. Raylee Kirkland (8th) and Sara Bellingham (13th) also medalled for Mason County. The Lady Royals were without their top runner, Valerie Rice, who is out indefinitely with a knee injury. Two Royals medalled- Jim Myers (8th) and Nathan Woods (15th). Saints and Lady Saints advance to finals in All "A"
The St. Patrick boys and girls soccer teams both beat Menifee County in the championship games of the 11th Region All "A" Classics Thursday night to advance to the All "A" Classic state tournament in Frankfort. Zerubabel Oleweremi and Edward Jimenez scored three goals apiece to lead the Saints to a 9-1 victory. Brian Flores had two goals and Jacob Heller had a goal and an assist. Mason County boys and girls golf teams win at Adams County Country Club
The Mason County boys golf team beat West Union 131 to 142 Wednesday at the Adams County Country Club. Mason County was one-under-par as a team. Corey Richmond of West Union was the medalist with a two-under-par 31. Mason County was lead by 8th grader Jackson Frame with a 32. Tanner Walton, Josh Harris and Eric White each shot a 33. The Royals improve to 6-1.
The Mason County girls shot a season-low 154 to beat Peebles (180) and West Union (212) at the Adam County Country Club. Mason County junior Tiara Harris was the medalistwith a 35. Lauren Vice and Bethany Foister both shot a 39. The Lady Royals are 9-0.

Saints beat Bellevue, lose to NewCath
The St. Patrick boys golf team picked up its first win of the season by beating Bellevue Monday at Flagg Springs Golf Course in Campbell County. The Saints lost to Newport Central Catholic on the back nine at the Maysville Country Club Tuesday. Russell Rigg was the medalist both days. He shot a 39 Monday and a 38 Tuesday.
