The Mason County Lady Royals defeated Lone Oak 59-48 today to take fifth place in the Madison Southern Holiday Classic. The Lady Royals went 2-2 in the classic and play at Augusta Saturday night.

Lady Saints rout Lady Comets 86-58

The St. Patrick Lady Saints routed the West Carter Lady Comets 86-58 Tuesday night in Olive Hill. The Lady Saints are 4-1. They host the Deming Lady Devils Friday night.

Royals are Champions of Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic

The Mason County Royals outscored the Winton Woods Warriors 9 to 3 in overtime for a 50-44 victory today in the championship game of the 19th annual Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic. There were six ties and seven lead changes. Russ Middleton's three-pointer at the start of the overtime period gave the Royals the lead for good. Middleton scored a game high 20 points and was named the most valuable player of the tournament. Treg Setty added ten points. Keith Downing, Phil Barner and Neal Pawsat were named to the all tournament team.

Chambers scores six points and four rebounds in Flyers' loss

De'Sarae Chambers scored six points and had four rebounds in the Dayton Flyers' 77-68 loss to Bowling Green Monday in the championship game of the Dayton Flyer Classic. Dayton hosts Eastern Michigan on Sunday.

Royals visit Daytona International Speedway

The Mason County Royals visited Daytona International Speedway Monday afternoon. The visit was hosted by Mason County graduate Larry Duzan who works at the speedway. Duzan was Mason County's first quarterback. He threw a pass to Allen Feldhaus Jr. for Mason County's first-ever touchdown in 1979. Duzan scored on the conversion run. Photos on the previous post from top to bottom are: current Mason County quarterback Neal Pawsat with Duzan; the team in front of the Daytona sign and Jordan Gilbert taking a photo with the grandstand in the background One other note, Mason County scorekeeper Tony Sapp drove his van into the infield of the speedway on Saturday. The Mason County Lady Royals led for most of the game, but lost to Garrard County 62-58 tonight in the Madison Southern Holiday Classic. Keller Menke scored a game-high 20 points.

Royals run past UFCA 66-37

The Mason County Royals jumped out to a 10-1 lead and beat United Faith Christian Academy 66-37 today in the semifinals of the 19th Annual Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic. Mason County made 9-of-13 shots in the first quarter including four three-pointers. Russ Middleton scored 12 points in the first quarter and ended up with a game-high 26 points. Phil Barner had a double-double, 10 points and 11 rebounds. UFCA, the number one team in Class 1A in North Carolina, did not have a player in double figures. The Falcons were missing one starter- 6'-5" senior Blake Smith- who was out with an injury. Mason County plays Winton Woods in the championship game Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.

Lofton scores 14 points in Mersin BSB. loss

Chris Lofton came off the bench to score 14 points for Mersin BSB. in a 74-73 loss to Pinar Karsiyaka Saturday in the Turkish Basketball League. Lofton is 8th in the league in scoring with an average of 17 points per game.

Chambers has 17 points and eights rebounds in UD win

De'Sarae Chambers scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Dayton Flyers to a 76-36 win over Lipscomb Sunday in the Dayton Flyer Classic. It's the second straight game Chambers has scored a new career high in points. She had 16 points Tuesday night against Loyola Chicago. The Flyers play Bowling Green in the championship game Monday night.

Saints end skid with an 81-72 win over Polar Bears

The St. Patrick Saints snapped a four-game losing streak with an 81-72 win over the Bracken County Polar Bears tonight in the First National Bank Holiday Tournament at Bracken County. Stephen Mason scored a game-high 25 points for the Saints. St. Patrick has won two out of three games against Bracken County this season. The tournament continues on Monday. St. Patrick plays Russell at 6:30 p.m.

Middleton's 30 points lead Royals past Harrison 63-59

Russ Middleton scored a career-high 30 points (16 in the fourth quarter) to lead the Mason County Royals to a 63-59 win over Harrison High School of Kennesaw, Ga. today in the 19th Annual Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic. Mason County was 1-of-15 from the field in the first quarter and trailed 15-2. The Royals opened the second quarter on a 15-0 run. There were three ties and 12 lead changes in the game. Harrison led by 44-38 after three quarters. Middleton took over in the final period. He was 4-of-5 from the free throw line and 5-of-7 from the field in the final eight minutes. Middleton moved past Mike Corde and Timmy Myrick into eighth place on the Royals' all-time scoring list. Mason County outrebounded Harrison 40-30 including 18-4 on the offensive end. Phil Barner had a game-high 13 rebounds. Mason County plays United Faith Christian Academy of Charlotte, NC in the upper bracket semifinal game Monday at noon.

Royals arrive in Daytona Beach

After a long day of travel (16 1/2 hours including stops), the Mason County Royals arrived at their hotel in Daytona Beach, Florida a few minutes ago. I rode the team bus. We made good time until we got to Atlanta. Traffic was so slow on I-75, the driver decided to take side roads for awhile. Several parents who either drove earlier or flew, were waiting at the hotel. Vicki Sapp had everybody checked in so there was no wait. That was good because a girls' basketball team arrived right before we did. Mason County plays Harrison High School of Kennesaw, Ga. tomorrow at noon in the 19th Annual Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic. Here is a rundown of the Royals' travel log today:

Turner has 35 points, 11 rebounds in Berea's win over Transy

Mikah Turner scored 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Berea to an 85-80 overtime win over Transylvania Monday night. Turner was 13-of-23 from the field including 5-of-11 on three-pointers. He was 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the overtime period. Turner had two blocks and one assist. He played 43 minutes. Turner is averaging 20 points a game.

Chambers scores career-high 16 points in Flyers' win

De'Sarae Chambers scored a career-high 16 points and had nine rebounds in the Dayton Flyers' 85-55 victory over Chicago Loyola tonight. Chambers was 6-of-10 from the field including 1-of-3 on three-pointers. She was 3-0f-3 from the free throw line. She also had one assist.

Miller has five points and five assists for Wildcats

Darius Miller scored five points and tied his career-high with five assists in Kentucky's 102-58 win over Tennessee State tonight. Miller also had three rebounds. He played 20 minutes. Miller is averaging 4.6 points and 3.6 rebounds a game.

Chambers scores seven points in UD win

De'Sarae Chambers scored seven points and grabbed two rebounds in the University of Dayton's 59-56 win over Wright State Sunday afternoon. Chambers is averaging 5.7 points and
2.4 rebounds per game. Dayton closes out its pre-Christmas schedule at home Tuesday night against Loyola Chicago.

Mason County-Pendleton County rescheduled, date change for Mason County vs. Brossart girls' game

The Mason County at Pendleton County boys' basketball game that was postponed last Tuesday has been rescheduled on Jan. 13.
The Mason County at Bishop Brossart girls' basketball game originally scheduled on Feb. 5 has been pushed back one day to Feb. 6. The change was made to help Bishop Brossart with
Title IX scheduling requirements.

Lofton returns, scores six points in Mersin win

After missing three games with a broken finger, Chris Lofton returned to action Saturday and scored six points to help Mersin BSB. edge Erdemirspor 81-80 in the Turkish Basketball League. Lofton is 9th in the league with an average of 17.38 points per game.

Saints outscored by Estill County 97-86

The St. Patrick Saints lost to the Estill County Engineers 97-86 today in the 7th place game in the Covered Bridge Classic Holiday Tournament in Fleming County. The Saints go 0-3 in the tournament and are 3-5 overall. St. Patrick's next game is Dec. 26 against the Bishop Brossart Mustangs in the First National Bank Classic at Bracken County.

Lady Royals suffer heartbreaking loss

The Mason County Lady Royals came oh so close to their first win of the season tonight in the Mountain Dew Lady Royal Shootout at The Fieldhouse. But the Lewis County Lady Lions ended the game on a 5-0 run to beat Mason County for the first time. The final score: Lewis County 54, Mason County 51. McKenzie Butler hit a three-pointer and two free throws to put the Lady Royals ahead 51-49. Lewis County went back in front at 54-51. Mason County's desperation shot from behind the time line at the buzzer fell short. Mason County (0-7) plays Garrard County on Dec. 29 in the Madison Southern Holiday Classic.

Saints lose to Bracken County 86-83

The St. Patrick Saints led 33-19 at the end of the first quarter, but lost to the Bracken County Polar Bears 86-83 today in the Covered Bridge Classic Holiday Tournament at Fleming County.
It is the first win of the season for Bracken County. St. Patrick (3-4) will play Estill County in the 7th place game Sunday at 1 p.m.

Miller has solid game in UK's rout of Appy State

Darius Miller scored three points and had three rebounds, four assists, one block and two steals in Kentucky's 93-69 victory over Appalachian State today in Freedom Hall. Jodies Meeks led the Wildcats with 46 points-the sixth highest scoring game all-time by a Kentucky player.

Roylas 3-of-16 on foul shots in 48-47 loss to Franklin County

The Mason County Royals made just 3-of-16 free throws in a 48-47 loss to the Franklin County Flyers today in the Kentucky Bank Shootout at Bourbon County. There were four ties and seven lead changes in the game. With Franklin County leading 46-45, Mason County missed four short shots and two technical free throws. Russ Middleton's runner in the lane put the Royals up
47-46 with 1:10 left. Vance Hall's basket with 11 seconds to play put Franklin County back in the lead. Mason County missed two shots in the closing seconds. Franklin County won despite scoring only four points in the fourth quarter. The Flyers outrebounded the Royals on the offensive end 17-8. After being held to two points in the first half, Middleton ended up with a
game-high 14 points. Keith Downing scored a career-high 13 points. Mason County's next game is Dec. 27 against Harrison High School of Kennesaw, Georgia in the Sunshine Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Lady Royals rally comes up short in 59-52 loss to Campbell County

After trailing by 11 in the third quarter, the Mason County Lady Royals rallied to get to within two points in the fourth quarter. But Campbell County was able to pull out a 59-52 victory tonight in the Mountain Dew Lady Royal Shootout at The Fieldhouse. Beth Queen scored a career-high 18 points for the Lady Royals. Keller Menke added 12 points. Four Lady Camels scored in double figures. Junior center Brianna Peters led the way with 16 points. Ripley defeated Lewis County 62-56 in the opening game. The shootout continues Saturday night. It's Ripley against Campbell County at 6:30 followed by Mason County against Lewis County.

Mason County freshmen girls beat Bracken County 33-31

The Mason County girls' freshman team beat Bracken County 33-31 last night. Mariah Henry led the Lady Royals in scoring with 14 points. Mason County is 4-1.

Buchanan KFCA District Coach of the Year

Mason County Coach David Buchanan has been named the Class 3A District 7 Coach of the Year by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association for the second straight year. It's the fifth time Buchanan has received a District Coach of the Year Award from the KFCA. This past season, Buchanan guided Mason County to a 9-3 record. The Royals won the district title with a 4-0 mark including their first win over Russell in Flatwoods. Drew Abrams of Russell was named the Class 3A District 7 Player of the Year.

Saints play in Covered Bridge Classic at Fleming County this weekend

The St. Patrick Saints play the Fleming County Panthers Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the 2nd Annual Covered Bridge Classic Holiday Tournament at Fleming County. Here is a link to the tournament bracket.

Mason County at Pendleton County boys' game postponed

The Mason County at Pendleton County boys' basketball game is postponed tonight. The game is expected to be rescheduled, but the date has not been determined.

Lady Royals lose to Holy Cross 63-51

The Mason County Lady Royals fell to 0-5 with a 63-51 loss to the Holy Cross Lady Indians tonight at home. Mason County led 9-3 in the early going. But trailed by 11 at the half after being outscored 19-4 in the second quarter. The Lady Royals opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run to get to within three at 30-27. The Lady Indians responded by ending the quarter on a 10-2 run and scoring the first two points of the fourth quarter to take their biggest lead at 45-31. Mason County would get no closer than nine the rest of the way. Stacey Flesch led Holy Cross in scoring with 22 points and Stephanie Howard had a double-double, 15 points and 11 rebounds. Mason County junior Keller Menke scored a game-high 26 points. She also had seven rebounds, three asists and six steals. Bailey Menke added 12 points. Mason County plays Campbell County Friday night in the Mountain Dew Lady Royals Shootout at The Fieldhouse.

Tolle letters at Georgetown College

Freshman defensive end Jackson Tolle lettered in varsity football at Georgetown College. The Tigers' banquet was held on Dec. 7. Tolle was one of eight true freshmen to letter. He played in six games and made eight tackles (five solo). Tolle begins winter workouts on Jan. 19.

Mason County AAU volleyball team picks up first win

The Mason County AAU 15 and under volleyball team picked up its first win Sunday night at Sports of All Sorts in Florence. Mason County beat the Gold team 24-26, 25-22, 25-21. Here is a link to the scores and schedules. Mason County is listed as ROYAL BLUE (FRAYSURE).

Miller had five points and three rebounds in UK's win over IU

Darius Miller scored five points and had three rebounds in Kentucky's 72-54 win over Indiana Saturday. He also had two blocks, one assist and one steal.

Saints over the Panthers 71-59

Stephen Mason scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Lee Gallenstein had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead to the St. Patrick Saints to a 71-59 win over the Augusta Panthers at home tonight. Nick Cropper scored 12 points and Matt Thompson had 14 rebounds for the Saints who outrebounded the Panthers 60-34. St. Patrick's next game is Friday night against Fleming County in the Fleming County Tournament.

Royals top St. Xavier 62-55

The Mason County Royals used a 16-1 run to beat Cincinnati St. Xavier 62-55 today in the Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Holiday Classic at the Bank of Kentucky Center at Northern Kentucky University. There were seven lead changes and 10 ties. St. Xavier led 43-37 with 5:12 left in the game. Neal Pawsat had a four-point play to begin the Royals' 16-1 run which put Mason County up 53-44. The Bombers got to within two at 53-51, but Mason County was able to hang on for its fourth straight win. St. Xavier only had one field goal in the fourth quarter.
Russ Middleton led Mason County with 22 points and moved past Tommy Corde into 10th place on the Royals' all-time scoring list. Erik Stenger, a 6-7 senior center, scored a game-high 24 points for St. Xavier, but was held to two points in the fourth quarter. Mason County plays at Pendleton County Tuesday night.

Lady Saints 3-0 after 65-37 win over Bourbon County

Four Lady Saints scored in double figures as St. Patrick won its home opener 65-37 over the Bourbon County Lady Colonels Friday night. Anne Klee had a double-double, 15 points and 1o rebounds. Molly Parker had 13 points, and Charmisa Payne and Cierra Payne scored 11 points apiece. The Lady Saints play at East Carter next Friday night.

Bluegrass Buckeye Charity Holiday Classic today and tomorrow

The 7th Annual Bluegrass Buckeye Charity Holiday Classic will be played today and tomorrow in the Bank of Kentucky Arena at Northern Kentucky University. The opening game pits defending state champion Mason County against Cincinnati St. Xavier, a state semifinalist last season. Royals beat Scott 69-48

Mason County overcame early foul trouble to two starters to beat Scott 69-48 tonight in Taylor Mill. Russ Middleton picked up his second foul with 5:50 left in the third quarter. Keith Downing played only 15:59 before fouling out. Neal Pawsat also fouled out. There were 52 fouls and 63 free throws in the game. Middleton scored 15 points. Treg Setty had a double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds. E. J. Murray scored 15 points for Scott. The St. Patrick Lady Saints' home opener tonight against Rose Hill Christian has been cancelled due to the inclement weather. The Lady Saints' next game is tomorrow night at home against the Bourbon County Lady Colonels.

Big third quarter pushes Lady Saints past Lady Bears

The St. Patrick Lady Saints outscored the Bracken County Lady Bears 28-13 in the third quarter on their way to a 71-60 win in Brooksville tonight. St. Patrick led by 16 points in the fourth quarter. Bracken County got to within three at 59-56 with 2:18 to play, but the Lady Saints answered with a 7-0 run. Brooke Mosler came off the bench to lead St. Patrick with 19 points. Molly Parker added 13 points. Haley Ware was Bracken County's leading scorer with 18 points. St. Patrick plays its home opener Thursday night against Rose Hill Christian.

Royals use"D" to win second straight

The Mason County Royals outscored the Holy Cross Indians 11-2 in the fourth quarter to win
44-29 tonight at The Fieldhouse. The Royals led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter before the Indians cut the lead to five at the half. Holy Cross scored just nine points in the second half. The final margin was the largest of the night. Russ Middleton was the only Mason County player in double figures with 12 points. The Royals play at Scott Friday night.

The King twins combined for 36 points for Deming- Kyle had 20 and Luke scored 16. Stephen Mason led St. Patrick with 20 points. Andy Clarke added 15 points. The Saints host Augusta Saturday night.

Lady Royals have big rally, but lose 48-45 to Villa Madonna

The Mason County Lady Royals trailed by 15 in the second quarter and by 10 in the fourth quarter, and rallied to take a one point lead, but lost 48-45 to the Villa Madonna Blue Lightning tonight in Villa Hills. Villa Madonna led 25-10 with 1:51 to play in the second quarter and 40-30 with 6:08 left in the game. Mason County went on a 13-2 run to lead 43-42 with 1:32 to play.
Villa Madonna outscored Mason County 6-2 to the rest of the way. The Lady Royals had a chance to tie the game but missed a long three-pointer in the closing seconds. Amy Kruetzer led the Blue Lightning with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Kim Schroer scored 16 points. Villa Madonna did not attempt a three-point shot in the game. Mason County junior Keller Menke scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter. Kaitlyn Smith added 12 points for the Lady Royals. Mason County plays at Fleming County Friday night.

Grutza throws TD pass in UC's 29-24 win over Hawaii

Dustin Grutza threw what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown pass in the University of Cincinnati's 29-24 victory over Hawaii Saturday night. Grutza entered the game in the second quarter and returned in the fourth quarter. He completed a 69 yard touchdown pass to Marty Gilyard with 4:42 left in the game. Grutza completed 3-of-7 passes for 75 yards. The touchdown pass was his fifth of the season. UC will play Virginia Tech in the FedEx Orange Bowl on Jan. 1 in Miami.

Miller's weekend stats

Darius Miller made his second start for Kentucky Saturday. He scored three points, grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, dished out a career-high five assists, had two blocks and one steal in the Wildcats' 73-67 loss to Miami. Miller did not start today's game against Mississippi Valley State. He scored two points, had one rebound and one steal in 11 minutes. Kentucky won 88-65.

Former St. Patrick basketball standout Joanna Bess is playing professional basketball in Spain.

is second on the Saints' all-time scoring list. She is 8th on the career scoring list at Thomas More College.

Mason's 25 points lead Saints to second straight win

Stephen Mason scored 25 points to lead the St. Patrick Saints to a 70-49 victory over the Silver Grove Big Trains tonight in Silver Grove. Lee Gallenstein scored a career-high 17 points and Matt Thompson had a double-double, 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Saints shot 55% from the field in the second half. St. Patrick (2-1) plays its home opener Tuesday night against the Deming Black Devils.

Lady Royals lose to Scott 64-50

The Mason County Lady Royals had a one-point lead at halftime, but were outscored 31-16 in a 64-50 road loss to the Scott Lady Eagles tonight. Lauren Tibbs and Shelbi Benzinger combined to score 51 of Scott's 64 points. Tibbs made of 11-of-15 shots from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line for 28 points. Benzinger was 8-of-12 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line for 23 points. Keller Menke led Mason County with 13 points. Kaitlyn Smith added 10 points. The Lady Royals play at Villa Madonna Monday night.

Defense leads Royals to 59-39 win over Cov. Cath.

The Mason County Royals held Covington Catholic to 12 first half points and beat the Colonels
59-39 tonight in Park Hills. Mason County led 29-12 at the half and was up by as many as 26 points in the third quarter. Three Royals scored career-highs - Phil Barner with 13, Neal Pawsat 12 and Keith Downing with 11. Russ Middleton added 10 points and moved pass Dustin Grutza into 12th place on the Royals' career scoring list. Luke Maile and Alex Ives were the only two Covington Catholic players to score in the first half. Maile ended up with 14 points and Ives had 12. The Colonels were without starting guard Mitch Shover who was sick. Mason County hosts Holy Cross Tuesday night.

Stephen Mason scored 35 points to lead the St. Patrick Saints to their first win of the season- a 95-93 road victory over the Bracken County Polar Bears. Devon Workman scored 31 points for Bracken County. St. Patrick plays at Silver Grove Saturday night.

The Mason County Royals will play Cincinnati St. Xavier Dec. 13 in the Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Holiday Classic at the Bank of Kentucky Arena on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. Proceeds from the two-day event will be donated to four charities- Neediest Kids of All, Ruth Lyons Children’s Fund, Queen City Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Basketball legend Oscar Robertson is the Honorary Chairperson of the event. He will sign copies of his new book both days of the classic. Advance tickets priced at $10 for adults and $6 for students are available at all of the participating high schools. A $15 weekend pass will cover admission both days. The St. Patrick Saints lost their season opener 76-47 to St. Henry Tuesday night in Erlanger.

Royals lose to Highlands 54-51 in double overtime

The Mason County Royals lost to the Highlands Bluebirds 54-51 in double overtime at The Fieldhouse tonight in the season opener for both teams. Mason County led by nine points in the third quarter, but trailed by five with 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Russ Middleton hit 2-of-3 free throws and Treg Setty drained a three-pointer to tie the game. The Royals had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed a shot inside and missed the offensive tap. Mason County's Phil Barner grabbed the rebound and was trying to get off a shot when he was fouled, but the officials ruled that time had expired before the foul was called. Stephen Kowolonek had 24 points and 13 rebounds for Highlands. Mason County was led by Setty with 16 points and Middleton with 15. Mason County was without two starters- Keith Downing and Ryan Hamm. Highlands was missing some players who are members of the Bluebirds' football team. The loss snapped a couple of long winning streaks- Mason County had won 13 straight season openers and 20 consecutive home openers. Highlands won the junior varsity game in double overtime. The Royals play at Covington Catholic Friday night.

Mason County boys' frosh open season with a win

The Mason County boys' freshmen team opened the season Monday night with a 45-41 win over Clark County at The Fieldhouse. The Royals were led in scoring by Tyler Black and Josh Harris with 14 points apiece. Mason County plays at Montgomery County Thursday night.

Lofton breaks finger, out three weeks

Chris Lofton suffered a broken finger in practice Wednesday and is expected to miss three weeks of action. He has already missed one game- a 100-96 overtime loss on Saturday. Lofton is 6th in the Turkish Basketball League in scoring with an average of 19 points a game for Mersin BSB.

Lady Royals lose season opener 56-55

The Mason County Lady Royals lost their season opener 56-55 to the Bracken County Lady Bears tonight. The Lady Royals trailed 52-46 with three minutes to play, but went on an 8-0 run to lead 54-52. Bracken County regained the lead at 55-54. Mason County made 1-of-2 free throws to tie it at 55-55. Bracken County's Haley Ware was fouled with 13.1 seconds to play. She missed the first free throw, but made the second. Mason County missed a three-pointer with four seconds to go and Bracken County got the rebound to secure the win. Hannah Haight led Bracken County with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Ware added 12 points. Keller Menke had a double-double for Mason County- 15 points and 13 rebounds. McKenzie Butler and Bailey Menke added 12 points apiece for the Lady Royals.
