Wald Park renovation ground-breaking ceremony for set August 27

The board of directors of Wald Park  Inc. invites the public to a ground-breaking ceremony for the park renovation project on August 27 at 11 a.m.

The event will include a formal ground-breaking ceremony and an old-fashioned ballpark celebration including a bicycle decorating contest. Hot dogs, peanuts, Cracker Jacks and bubblegum will be available. Historic memorabilia highlighting Wald Park's history will be displayed.

Donations, pledges and gifts have raised more than $400,000 for the project which will include state-of-the-art baseball, softball and soccer fields. The expected proceeds from the sale of donated real estate will bring the total to more than $500,000.

Dr. Josh Owens with Wald Park, Inc. says JRA Architects of Lexington is still working on the design of the park.

Owens says he hopes most of the excavating, seeding and fertilization of the fields can be completed before winter.

He says its too early to tell when games will be played at the facility.

The group hopes to bring Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken baseball and softball leagues to Maysville.

Wald Park was established in 1940 and has hosted knothole and high school baseball games, softball games, circuses and other events.
