Lady Royals rally to beat Bourbon County in OT

The Mason County Lady Royals rallied from a nine-point third quarter deficit to beat the Bourbon County Lady Colonels 55-52 in overtime tonight in the quarterfinal round of the 10th Region Tournament at Campbell County Middle School.

Mason County led 14-6 in the first quarter, but Bourbon County went on a 20-3 run to lead 26-17. The Lady Colonels made four 3-pointers during the run.

Mason County cut the deficit to five by the end of the second quarter, but Bourbon County put together a 6-2  run in the first four minutes of the third quarter to lead 36-27. The Lady Royals answered by scoring the final seven points of the quarter.

There were four ties and eight lead changes in the fourth quarter. Whitney O'Mara made one of two free throws to tie the game at 50-50 with 16 seconds left to play. Bourbon County missed two foul shots with 6.5 seconds to go. Mason County did not get off a shot as time expired.

The Lady Royals scored the first five points in overtime. Bourbon County's only points in the extra period were on a shot at the buzzer.

O'Mara had a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, Bourbon County senior Haleigh Yazell also had a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Mason County will play the Scott Eagles in the semifinals Friday night at 7:30. Scott defeated Nicholas County 70-39 in tonight's second game.
