Harris leads Royals to a 56-8 win over Lewis County

Josh Harris rushed for 95 yards and four touchdowns and threw for another touchdown to lead the Mason County Royals to a 56-8 district win over the Lewis County Lions tonight. Mason County has won five straight games. Harris threw a 30-yard half back option touchdown pass to Tyler McFarland on the Royals' first play. Mason County led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter, 35-0 at the half and 49-0 after three quarters. Neal Pawsat completed 7-of-11 passes for 149 yards and one touchdown. Mason County (5-1 overall and 1-0 in the district) plays the Russell Red Devils in Flatwoods on October 8.

Royals open district play vs. Lewis County tonight

The Mason County Royals play their district opener tonight at home against the Lewis County Lions. Mason County has won four straight games. Lewis County has lost three in a row after opening the season with back-to-back wins over Knott County Central (57-12) and Bath County (21-8). The Lions lost to Fleming County 14-10 in their district opener last week. Lewis County's other two losses were to Powell County (26-19) and Fairview (51-0). Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. The tailgate party begins at 5 p.m.

Notes:
  • Mason County has gone 4-0 in district play in each of the last two seasons;
  • Mason County leads the series with Lewis County 20-6. The Royals have won 14 in a row against the Lions including 42-14 last season. Lewis County's last win over Mason County was in 1988.

Royals, Rigg qualify for state golf tournament

The Mason County Royals and St. Patrick senior Russell Rigg have qualified for the boys' state golf tournament. Mason County was the runner-up in the Region 8 Tournament today at Pendleton County Country Club. The Royals finished eight shots behind Highlands. Bradley Litzinger and Tanner Walton led Mason County with 77s. Rigg shot a 75 and finished in the third place in the individual competition. The Leachman Buick & GMC/KHSAA Boys' State Golf Tournament will be played October 7-8 at Bowling Green Country Club.

Neal Pawsat is Red Zone Player of the Week

Neal Pawsat is the Red Zone Player of the Week at Mason County High School. Pawsat threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 81 yards and another touchdown in the Royals' 41-7 victory over Harrison County.

Cost of airfare reduced for Royals' trip to Hawaii

The cost for airline tickets for the Mason County Royals' trip to Hawaii in December has been reduced. Here is the press release from Mason County High School:

The Mason County Royals basketball team will play in the Iolani Prep Classic in Hawaii in December and it has just become a better deal. Airline tickets have been reduced and can now be purchased for $890. There are 27 tickets left and they must be purchased by Oct 12th. Lady Royals qualify for state tourney with runner-up finish in region

The Mason County Lady Royals qualified for the state golf tournament with a runner-up finish in the Region 8 Tournament today at A.J. Jolly Golf Course in Campbell County. Scott County won the region title with a 336 total. Mason County was second at 347 and Pendleton County took place at 373. Christen Cropper led Mason County with an 84 and finished in fifth place in the individual competition. Mason County advances to the Leachman Buick & GMC/KHSAA Girls' State Golf Tournament Oct. 4-6 at Bowling Green Country Club.

Mason County girls 5th, boys 10th in Scott Classic

The Mason County girls took fifth place and the Mason County Royals finished 10th in the Scott Classic Saturday. Mason County sophomore Julia Woods finished second in the individual competition, nine seconds behind the winner in a time of 20:56.23. Cara Woods also medalled. Freshman Nick Robinson led the Royals with an 11th place finish. Nathan Woods also medalled. Here are links to the results:

The regional golf tournaments are this week. The girls' Region 8 tournament will be played Monday at A.J. Jolly Golf Course in the Campbell County. The Pendleton County Country Club will host the boys' Region 8 Tournament on Tuesday. The winning and runner-up teams from each girls' region and the top four individuals not on the winning or runner-up team advance to the Leachman Buick & GMC/KHSAA Girls' State Golf Tournament October 4-6 at Bowling Green Country Club. Royals rout Harrison County 41-6

The Mason County Royals scored on all six of their first half possessions and routed the Harrison County Thorobreds 41-6 tonight. Mason County had 239 yards of total offense in the first quarter and led 27-0. Neal Pawsat completed 6-of-9 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 81 yards and another touchdown. Josh Harris had three receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Harris ran for another touchdown and had 12 tackles. Troy Chenault had two rushing touchdowns. Jordan Gilbert set up Mason County's third touchdown with a 53-yard run on a reverse. Pawsat's 71-yard pass to Gilbert set up the Royals' final touchdown. Mason County ended up with 456 yards of total offense. The Royals (4-1) host the Lewis County Lions Thursday night.

Royals host Harrison County tonight

The Mason County Royals host the Harrison County Thorobreds tonight at 7:30 p.m. Both teams have reeled off three straight wins after dropping their season openers. Both squads are coming off strong defensive efforts last week. Mason County held Rowan County to seven points. The Vikings entered the game averaging 40.5 points per game. Harrison County limited Scott to less than 100 yards rushing. Harrison County's leading rusher, Caleb Reeder, suffered a torn ACL in last week's game. Nick Slucher, a 5-7, 156-pound junior, is Harrison County's second-leading rusher. He has rushed for 206 yards and four touchdowns. Harrison County quarterback Joe Korona, a 6-foot, 171- pound junior, has completed 39-of-83 passes for 426 yards and three touchdowns. He has thrown five interceptions.

Notes:
  • After playing three of their first four games on the road, the Royals will play four of the last six regular season games at home;
  • Harrison County and Mason County have played one common opponent-Montgomery County. The Thorobreds lost to the Indians 32-20 in the Recreation Bowl . One week later, the Royals rallied to beat Montgomery County 34-28;
  • Mason County beat Harrison County for the first time last season. The Thorobreds had won the first 10 meetings;
  • The tailgate party begins at 5 p.m. The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, sliced tomatoes, potato salad, baked beans, chips, drink and dessert for $5.

Lady Royals volleyball team beats Augusta 2-0

The Mason County Lady Royals volleyball team has won back-to-back matches for the first time. Mason County, playing its first varsity season, beat Augusta 2-0 tonight. The scores were 25-17 and 25-9. Cara Irwin had five kills and seven assists. Shelby Hesler had six kills. The Lady Royals defeated Montgomery County 2-1 Tuesday night. Mason County (6-9) plays at Lewis County Monday night.

The Mason County boys and girls golf teams posted wins at the Pendleton County Country Club Wednesday. The Royals defeated Pendleton County 150-159. The Lady Royals had a team score of 170 to win a tri-match against Pendleton County (179) and Bourbon County (225). Here are the individual scores:

Chris Morris medalist at Anderson Fall Invitational

Lady Royals beat Lady Camels

The Mason County Lady Royals defeated the Campbell County Lady Camels 184-253 today at AJ Jolly Golf Course. Christen Cropper was the medalist with a 42. Bridgit Morris had a 46 and Tiara Harris and Christian Arn shot 48s. Mason County is 10-1.

Carson Gray is Mason County's Red Zone Player of the Week

Senior inside linebacker Carson Gray is the Red Zone Player of the Week at Mason County High School. Gray led the Royals' defense with 11 tackles in a 20-7 win over the Rowan County Vikings.

Lady Royals 2nd in CKC Tournament

The Mason County Lady Royals finished second in the Central Kentucky Conference Tournament Monday at Stoner Creek Country Club in Paris. The Lady Royals finished 11 shots behind Grant County. Lauren Vice was shot a 43 and finished second in the individual competition. Vice, Tiara Harris and Christian Arn were named to the All-Conference Team.

Lady Royals 3rd in Montgomery Co/ Invitational, Morris is medalist

The Mason County girls golf team took third place in the Montgomery County Invitational at Mt. Sterling Country Club Saturday. The Lady Royals shot a season-low 328. Bridgit Morris (in photo) was the tournament medalist with a 77 and received all-state points. Tiara Harris shot an 80. Chrsiten Cropper had an 82 and Christian Arn shot an 88.

Royals 11th at Rowan County Invitational

The Mason County boys golf team had a season-low score of 318 and finished 11th out of 28 teams in the Rowan County Invitational at Eagle Trace Golf Course Saturday. Bradley Litzinger led the Royals with a 76. Jackson Frame shot a 78. Dee Hampton had an 81 and Tanner Walton followed with an 83.

Mason County was second in the girls' varsity meet and seventh in the boys' varsity Saturday at the Mason County Cross Country Invitational. Royals top Vikings 20-7

Most fans were probably expecting a high scoring contest when the Mason County Royals and the Rowan County Vikings squared off Friday night, but defense was the name of the game as the Royals won 20-7 in front of a big crowd in Morehead. Mason County scored on the opening drive of the game on a three-yard run by Josh Harris. That was the only score until Neal Pawsat capped off a third quarter drive with one-yard quarterback sneak. Rowan County answered on its next drive to cut the Royals' lead to 13-7. Troy Chenault ran nine yards for a touchdown with 4:55 left in the game. Rowan County's final drive ended on the Royals' 18 yard line and Mason County ran out the clock. Harris rushed for 134 yards on 19 carries. Mason County (3-1) hosts Harrison County this coming Friday night.

More than 900 expected for Mason County Cross Country Invitational

More than 900 athletes from 37 schools are expected to participate in the Mason County Cross Country Invitational Saturday at the cross country course on Clarks Run Road in Washington.
The public is invited to enter the Open Run at 8:30 a.m. The entry fee is $8. The school races begin at 9:30 a.m. and will include sixth grade and under through the varsity. The different races will begin every 40 to 45 minutes. Admission is $5.

Royals vs. Vikings tonight in Morehead

The Mason County Royals play the Rowan County Vikings in Morehead tonight. Rowan County is 4-0 with wins over Morgan County (21-14), Lincoln County (42-20), Estill County (28-17) and Fleming County (71-13). Mason County and Rowan County are both led by their "Big 3"- junior quarterback Adam Wing, senior tailback Darrell Cross and junior wide receiver Phillip Hodge for Rowan County, and senior quarterback Neal Pawsat, junior tailback Josh Harris and senior wide receiver Jordan Gilbert for Mason County. Cross, a 5-8, 180- pound speedster, has rushed for 419 yards and seven touchdowns in three games this season. He did not play in the season opener. Last week against Fleming County, Cross rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw a touchdown pass and returned a punt for a touchdown. In the Class AAA statistics, Pawsat is No. 1 in passing yards per game (199), Harris leads the way in scoring (12.7 ppg) and Gilbert is first in receiving yards per game (104) and is second in scoring (10.7). Mason County leads Class AAA in scoring (34.3 ppg) and passing yards per game (199). The Royals (2-1) are coming off a 55-24 victory over Bourbon County. The game will be televised by Wazoo Sports. Kickoff is set for 7:37 p.m.

Notes:
  • Rowan County leads the series with Mason County 15-8. The Royals have won the last six meetings. Mason County had to make two defensive stops in the closing seconds to edge Rowan County 28-26 last season;
  • Pawsat completed 18 passes for 268 yards (both are career highs) last year vs. the Vikings;
  • Cross rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to the Royals.

Lady Saints beat Montgomery County

The St. Patrick Lady Saints defeated the Montgomery County Lady Indians 25-9 and 25-14 tonight at St. Patrick. The Lady Saints have won three consecutive matches and are 7-2. St. Patrick hosts Mason County Friday night.

Mason Co. boys and girls golf teams beat Montgomery County

The Mason County boys and girls golf teams both posted wins over Montgomery County Wednesday at the Mt. Sterling Country Club. The Royals won 157-159. Tanner Walton led the way with a 37. Dee Hampton shot a 38. Jackson Frame had a 40, and Nathan Cracraft shot a 42.
The Royals are 8-2-2.
Lauren Vice won medalist honors with a 36 to lead the Lady Royals to a 168-225 victory. Bridgit Morris shot a 43. Tiara Harris had a 44 and Christen Cropper and Christian Arn shot 45s. The Lady Royals are 9-1.

The Mason County Royals dropped two spots to No. 4 in the Bluegrasspreps.com Class AAA Football Rankings. Somerset is the new No. 1 team. Central falls from No. 1 to No. 3. Paducah Tilghman moves up one spot to No. 2.

Mason County golf update

The Mason County Royals finished third out of eight teams in the Bluegrass East Conference nine-hole tournament Monday. Tanner Walton and Bradley Litzinger were named to the All-Conference Team.
On Saturday, the Mason County boys and girls teams played at Bowling Green Country Club (the si state tournament course). The boys finished ninth out of 31 teams. Dee Hampton led the way with an 80. Litzinger shot an 82. Walton and Jackson Frame had 84s.
The Lady Royals took seventh place in the 21-team tournament. Bridgit Morris shot an 84. Lauren Vice and Christen Cropper followed with 86s.

Josh Harris is the Red Zone Player of the Week at Mason County High School

Josh Harris is the Red Zone Player of the Week at Mason County High School. Harris rushed for 141 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries in the Royals' 55-24 win over Bourbon County.

The Red Zone Player of the Year program is designed to recognize varsity high school 
football players showing outstanding athletic performance, strong leadership, and the 
will to win in the Red Zone. These players are selected on their ability 
to elevate their own game, as well as the game of their teammates. Every week,
 one player is selected as the Red Zone Player of the Week at each participating 
high school.
At the end of the season, one player from each school will be nominated to represent 
their team for possible selection as a national finalist. From these local nominations, 
the Red Zone Player of the Year Awards Committee will select 50 finalists
to be announced in February 2010 to coincide with national 
letter of intent signing day. This is the ninth year for this unique and inspiring program. 
The Red Zone Player of the Year program is nationally sponsored by Procter & Gamble

St. Patrick senior Russell Rigg shot a 9-over-par 81 Saturday at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond and tied for 42nd place in the All "A" Classic state golf tournament.

Mason County girls 3rd, boys 9th at Fairview XC Invitational

Ryan Hamm wins Thomas More 5K Run/Walk

Thomas More sophomore basketball player Ryan Hamm of Maysville won the 7th Annual Thomas More Run More 5K Run/Walk Saturday. The basketball players were required to run in the race and Hamm won in a time of 19:27. Here is a link to the results.

Lady Saints and Saints shutout in Class A Soccer Cup

The St. Patrick girls and boys soccer teams were shutout in the Class A Soccer Cup Saturday. The Lady Saints were blanked by Owensboro Catholic 3-0. The Saints lost to Louisville Collegiate 10-0.

Royals win home opener 55-24 over Bourbon County

Josh Harris rushed for 141 yards and a career-high four touchdowns and Neal Pawsat completed 15-of-19 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns as the Mason County Royals beat the Bourbon County Colonels 55-24 tonight in the Meadowview Regional Medical Center Kickoff Classic. Harris scored on Mason County's first four possessions. Sophomore wide receiver Marcel Jackson and sophomore tailback Bryeon Gibbs scored their first varsity touchdowns. Mason County (2-1) plays at Rowan County next week.

Royals play home opener tonight vs. Bourbon County

The Mason County Royals play their home opener tonight against the Bourbon County Colonels in the Meadowview Regional Medical Center Kickoff Classic. Mason County (1-1) is coming off an open week. Bourbon County is 0-2. The Colonels have lost to Estill County (28-14) and Casey County (22-0). Bourbon County has been hit hard by injuries. Colonels Coach Johnny Poynter says they have spent more time at the hospital and doctor than at practice. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Notes:
  • Mason County senior linebacker Carson Gray has been cleared to play tonight after missing the first two games due to an illness;
  • Bourbon County leads the series 5-2. Mason County has won three straight against the Colonels. The Royals won 43-14 last year at Bourbon County;
  • The tailgate party begins at 5 p.m. The menu includes pulled pork, cole slaw, chips, corn, drink and dessert. The cost is $5.

Russell Rigg to play in All "A" Classic state tournament for the third time in four years

St. Patrick senior Russell Rigg will play in the All "A" Classic state golf tournament for the third time in four years. Rigg won the All "A" Classic regional tournament at Flagg Springs Golf Course last month. He also won the regional tournament his freshman season. Rigg was the regional runner-up his sophomore year but did not play in the state tournament because it was the same day as the Mason County/St. Patrick Invitational Tournament. Last year, Rigg finished third in the regional tournament and 12th in the state tournament. This year's state tournament will be played Saturday at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond. Rigg will start on No. 10 and has a 1:09 tee time.

Mason Co. boys and girls golf teams beat Highlands

The Mason County boys and girls golf teams both beat Highlands today at A. J. Jolly Golf Course in Campbell County. The Royals won by four shots. The Lady Royals posted a 23-shot victory.
Bradley Litzinger was the boys' medalist with a 37. Tanner Walton followed with a 38. Dee Hampton and Connor Osborne added 40s. Tiara Harris claimed medalist honors for the girls with a 43. Christian Arn had a 45. The Royals are 7-2-2. The Lady Royals are 8-1.

Limited number of airline tickets left for Royals' trip to Hawaii

A limited number of airline tickets are available for the Mason County Royals' trip to the Iolani Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Departure is December 15 with a return date of December 23. Royals beat Camels at A.J. Jolly Golf Course

The Mason County Royals defeated the Campbell County Camels 167-183 today at A. J. Jolly Golf Course in Campbell County. Bradley Litzinger and Dee Hampton were co-medalists with 41s.
Jackson Frame shot a 42 and Connor Osborne had a 43. The Royals' record is 6-2-2.

Lady Royals beat Lady Camels at A.J. Jolly

The Mason County Lady Royals defeated the Campbell County Lady Camels 171-213 Thursday at A. J. Jolly Golf Course in Campbell County. Bridgit Morris was the medalist with a 40. Tiara Harris shot a 42. Christen Cropper had a 44 and Lauren Vice shot a 45. The Lady Royals are 7-1.

Former NFL player Joseph Jefferson addresses the Royals

Former Indianapolis Colts safety Joseph Jefferson spoke to the Mason County Royals football team prior to today's practice. Mason County Coach David Buchanan was Jefferson's position coach for the 1998 Kentucky-Tennessee All-Star Game. Jefferson told the Royals to "relish coming to practice."

Mason Co. boys golf team loses to Rowan Co., ties Lewis Co. at Laurel Oaks

The Mason County boys golf team hosted a tri-match Wednesday at Laurel Oaks Golf Club. Rowan County won with a 156. Mason County and Lewis County tied at 162. Mason County junior Bradley Litzinger was the medalist with a one-under-par 35. Jackson Frame, Tyler Lippert and Nathan Cracraft had 42s for the Royals. Mason County is 5-2-2.

The Mason County Royals football team is the "Team of the Week" on the Scholastic Ball Report television show. Coach David Buchanan and players Neal Pawsat, Jordan Gilbert, Matt Eads and Josh Harris will on the show Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on WKYT Channel 27. The Scholastic Ball Report is hosted by Gary Ball and Louis Stout.
